Super C Starter Installation

The starter burned out of my 1954 Farmall Super C, so I bought a new one from YT Tractors advertised on this site. The old starter was difficult to get out as I had to turn it just right to pass the hydraulic piping for the rear lift cylinder on the Fast Hitch. When I got the new starter I can't seem to get it to line up the same way to slide in. Its maybe just an 1/8" too long on the case and I can't seem to get it in past the plumbing angles coming down from the front of the hydraulic control valve. Has anybody else had this problem and how did you resolve it? Did you have to take apart the hydraulic line and remove the lower ninety elbo to make it clear?

I just unscrewed the line fitting and moved it to the side. Didn't want to have a later leak. Drained hydraulic fluid before and refilled afterwards.

This past week I've removed my starter a few times. That same fitting is also preventing me for removal. Looks like I could turn it out a bit to get clearance. Heck, I ended up draining hydraulic fluid and undoing the hard pipe connected to it. Just moved it 1/2" out and starter goes in/out good.

So, did you turn the Street L at the top in just a little so the vertical 3" nipple came out a little away from the engine block so the lower ninety clears a little? And did you have any trouble screwing out that top Street L? I was worried that it wouldn't clear the valve casting on the back and I would be stuck with dismantling the whole thing?

This doesn't sound like a stock fast hitch setup. Street elbows?

You must have a bypass block and an aftermarket valve to control the fast hitch, because the stock valve is part of the lines that run from the pump to the hydraulic block under the gas tank.

Maybe some creative re-plumbing, using different fittings, can be done to get around this? Too bad we don't have a picture to work from.

I have what looks like the original valve in combination with the iron block that the twin lines from the hydraulic pump plumb into just behind and above the rear of the starter. As for the two hydraulic lines that go to the rear Fast Hitch cylinder, one comes straight off the back of this valve, and the other off the front of the valve, with what looks like a common galvanized iron street elbow screwed into it to head it down toward the ground, then about a 3" galvanized nipple screwed into that to pass by the back end of the starter, with another galvanized ninety degree pipe fitting turning toward the rear with the hydraulic hose screwed into that going back toward the rear. In the reprinted owner's manual book I bought for the tractor, there is one picture in there that shows a distant view of this area and it appears to be just what I have on my tractor. But these fittings are not painted red like the valve is, so they may not be original to the tractor. If the top Street L was turned in just slightly, then the bottom ninety would clear the starter. But I don't want to break it off in the pump as it is. So any ideas?

If grinding a little off the starter case would help , do it . It's quite thick , and there's nothing to leak out .....

Ok, I removed the hydraulic line that goes back to the Fast Hitch, and removed the lower ninety pipe fitting and got the starter mounted on the engine. But now the lower ninety pipe fitting won't clear to screw back on. Should I grind it to make it fit? Its too bad I couldn't turn the upper street L a little tighter that goes into the top of the hydraulic valve as that would give me more clearance to get the lower ninety on. Or do they make some sort of ninety that is smaller and fits better in tight spaces? It looks like a regular pipe fitting. Maybe a 1/8" pipe?

I am not removing the twin hydraulic lines that go to the hydraulic pump up front. I removed the line from the output of the main hydraulic valve that goes to the hydraulic cylinder on the Fast Hitch.
