Splitting the H

Hi everyone,
I currently have the belly pump out of my '49 H and the input shaft is disconnected because I just changed all the seals and rebuilt the pump. I am considering splitting the tractor to go after the rear main seal and the clutch and the throw out bearing.

My question is this, does that input shaft have to be disconnected to replace the throw out bearing or anything else right behind the engine? I don't want to have to break those input shaft bolts loose again if I don't have to.

Also, does anyone know if there is a torque spec on those tapered input shaft bolts?

Thanks much,
Harry

just susport tractor unbolt frame side rails take out starter as there is one bolt inside bell housing one beside starter . it will come apart.

If you've already broken them loose once it won't be a big deal to do it again. They had probably 40 years to take a set before.

The pressure plate, clutch, throwout bearing and flywheel pilot bearing can all be changed from underneath, without splitting the tractor, simply by disconnecting that input shaft. Unfortunately I don't think you can get the flywheel out the bottom, or else you could do it all without splitting.

The input shaft is also useful to have it as a clutch alignment tool with the tractor split, if the clutch kit doesn't come with an alignment tool.

The flywheel will not come out the bottom. Even if it would, you would need to be built like Hercules to man-handle it.

It sure is a lot easier working in there with belly pump out.

I power washed the frame out good on mine while it was apart.

(quoted from post at 22:03:35 06/07/16) They will come loose much easier this time, BTDT.

That's good to know. Thanks! Not sure if I really want to split this girl yet. It would mainly be for the rear crank seal. The clutch would be secondary.
