Anyone have PS on an H/SH?

Bob M, thanks for the reply to my earlier question, but does anyone have a Char-Lyn power steering system on an H or Super H that can comment on whether it will fit without destroying the hood? I will take some measurements from the one I'm putting on my SM, to compare with my SH but it would be nice to talk to someone that has one installed.
Thanks,
Stan(VA).

I have live hyd's on my SM and want to add PS. Can you run PS off of this hyd system? The only PS system I have seen the pump is where my live hyd pump is. Clue me in --- is this what your priorty flow diverter is for? Thanks for your input.

Guys,
Thanks for the advice and the pictures. I got my PS motor in this week and a prioity flow diverter from Northern Tool(Hydraulics) but the diverter valve has no instructions, so I emailed Prince (who made the valve) as well as Northern to try to find out which port is the controlled flow vs which is the excess so I don't get them reversed. I hope to install it this weekend on my SM. Then I will take measurements and see if it's feasable on the SH. If it's too tight, the idea of putting it over the fuel tank is probably a good one, if I can figure out how to make up the brackets.
BTW - I did look at both tractors yesterday with the hoods off and the SH would definately need a different bracket than the SM to mount the PS unit to the gage panel.
Thanks,
Stan(VA).

Stan, on my Super H with p/s, a hole is cut into the front of the hood to allow the resevoir to come up through the hood. The torque generator doesn't require any modifications, though. If I hear you right, this is the system that you din't want, however.

Hey Stan - My SM had a Charlyn PS installed when I acquired it. It's hood had been modified slightly (beat out) to make room for the steering motor. In the photo you can see the bump - it's to the right of the hood centerline, ahead of the temperature gage.

I also have an SH w/o power steering. It's hood is noticably smaller than the SM's. So gotta presume a more drastic modification would be required on the SH tin to get the hood to fit over a steering motor. I've never seen a Charlynn kit installed on an H or SH, but I'm sure someone out there has done it and can offer advice.

Good luck!! Bob M

I have an SMTA with a Charlyn and straight hood. I bought the tractor home and have never taken the hood off.

If you do not want to mangle your H hood, why not put the Charlyn next to the steering post similar to how this Behlen actuator is mounted on another SMTA.

In the last entry to this series we gave a brief overview of hydraulic system theory, its basic components and how it works. Now lets take a look at some general maintenance tips that will keep our system operating to its fullest potential. The two biggest enemies to a hydraulic system are dirt and water. Dirt can score the insides of cylinders, spool valves and pumps. Wate ... [Read Article]
