Frozen Stiff

I use my Farmall Cub to plow snow, but I think it has a frozen spot in the driveline. When it's below freezing (most of the time here in NY in the winter), the tractor won't move. The engine starts, the clutch works, the gear shift and PTO levers move normally, but it's as though the tractor's attached to a tree (it's not, I looked). When I let the clutch out, the engine will stall. When it's right around the freezing point, I can pop the clutch and it will "snap" into movement, but when it's really cold, I have to run the engine for 15-20 minutes (heat transfer to the driveline?) and rock the tractor to get it to move - sometimes without success. My question is: Any ideas as to whether I might have water in the differential or the wheel housings? The brake rods move freely, so I don't think it's them. It's supposed to be warm enough to work on it this weekend, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wow! Thanks for all your advice! I drained 8-12 ounces of water from my transmission (followed by some pretty ugly oil). Refilled with fresh 80w90 and should be good to go for the rest of the winter. Thanks again.

My freind you have water in your gear box. My B was the same way.You can move the shift lever but no go. Just for grins when it was about 28 one morning I took the plate off that lets you look down into the gear box. Looked fine on top but when I stuck a long screw driver down in it it a solid block of ice about 2 inchs into the oil. Wait till a warm day or put it inside and drain it and replace with some new fresh 90w. Your problem will go away

Today is one of those days that will generate much condensation. It is 57 deg, the first warm day we've had in quite a while. My F-20 is a flat red color now, caused by moisture brought on by the warm weather and cold steel/iron castings.
Bet his final drives have ice in them.

Hi Joe: When I pulled my first farmall apart it had a big block of ice down in the bottom of the gear box. You may want to stick a lantern under the transmission over night before you drain it to get all the ice melted first. Bob

Check your brake drums. Maybe water gets into there and freezes the shoes to the drum. Heating up will thaw, then re-freeze when it gets cold again.

I had ice in my H transmision one time and tried to move it - I cracked the transmision housing. Ice is your highest probability its best to play it safe and drain the oil.

I'd bet on water in the final drives and/or transmission. Get ya a 5 gallon bucket or two of 90wt, drain everything (dispose properly, I take all mine to a garage with a waste oil furnace) and refill with fresh.

Thanks. I'm thinking the trans is ok because I can move the shift lever easily. Sounds like it's downstream, but I'll drain everything anyway.

If there is ice in your transmission, it probably won't affect your abiity to shift gears, as that all happens in the top half of the transmission. The ice will be in a big frozen block at the bottom of the transmission, since the water is heavier than the oil. On my B, I drained over a gallon of clear water out of the transmission before any oil started coming out. It had been several years since I had last changed it.

Um, it's not mine. Garrett skidders are quite common in Northwest logging country, and that beast sits outside the Garrett dealer in Enumclaw, WA. It hasn't moved that I know of since I first saw it over 10 years ago. It looks to be in running condition, though, and is under cover year round.
