Got # 2 engine all apart. Found why the crankshaft was hard to turn and I guess the reason it was sold.

As you can see it looks kind of rough. I think the journals are ok though.

Got a little buildup on the #4 journal. We think it will polish ok but we need to get a good measurement on it.

My question is about these grooves in the area where the seal runs. Are those supposed to be there? If not would that be caused by a bent shaft?
Thanks!

is that dirt or rust pits on that rear journal?

Andrew polished and measured the crank shaft yesterday and it measures within specs! Got bearings ordered for it and soon as we get them in we can make sure it's straight.

It's not rust. Just a little dirty.

Actually, those grooves are there to get a small amount of oil TO the seal, to keep from burning it up.

Curt is correct. The grooves are to help keep the oil from going past the seal and leaking into the flywheel/clutch. The rear oil seal consists of two half moon pieces of felt held in place by a aluminum holder.

When you assemble the engine put each half of felt into the halves of the seal holder(they will be almost a quarter inch longer than the holders but do not cut them shorter to fit. If you cut them, aftera while the felt will shrink and the seal will start leaking.

Quite sure the grooves are to be there. I think they are intended to encourage the oil to move toward the direction of the oil pan, aiding the rear seal in doing its job.
