I have a 656 that I put a new pto engagement lever on as it was stuck & broke off. It wont stay locked or engaged in gear. Is there a detent or something that locks the lever or pull up valve on the pto itself. Thanks

I am no IH mechanic, but I had a similar problem on a 656 and watched an old IH mechanic as he took the valve apart and there was a small horizontal pin broken so the valve wouldn't engage.

I agree with Cool Hand. The end of travel (on and off) must be set with link adjustment so the lever on the PTO travels from end to end with the strong resistance in the middle of its travel. Jim

It has an "over-center" type of detent mechanism in the linkage. Perhaps something is preventing the over-center link from moving far enough in the "engaged" position?

This in itself is always apparent here in the U.K when attempting a purchase, as no matter what the model or condition the price will always be strong.
