Ron,
This always brings up a lot of opinions supporting both sides. Here's mine:
As long as the engine is clean inside and doesen't need a rebuild, I use Chevron Delo 400 30W. I do this because it's readily available and I don't have to look all over the place to find non-detergent oil. I use it in everything except my pickup and the wife's car. It keeps my life simpler. I have never had an oil related failure of any engine part while using high quality name brand oils. However, if I found that the engine in any piece of power equipment I own had a crankcase full of sludge, I wouldn't hesitate to pull it down and clean it out. Then I would use the same oil in it that I use in everything else.

My 2¢,
Phil

Ron I use 15/40 CAT brand(work there)or rotella in my gas 2424. I read somewhere that the anti-soot agents in a fleet/diesel oil will help keep engines that sit a while between use, from condensation damage. Plus, my tractor had no prior maintence history, I mean none! I practicly had to push the crude out with compressed air! Finally the oil stays pretty clean, and it doesnt smoke yet. Hope this can help, J.

I use non-detergent oil in my tractor only because the guy I bought it off of used it. If a tractor has been running on non-detergent and you switch to detergent it will clean out the sludge as everyone has said. This may not be a bad thing, but you engine may begin to burn oil because this sludge is gone. That is what one of the old timers told me, so I just thought I would let you know.

What you have to worry about is if the tractor had been run for many years with non detergent oil its possible to have a lot of sludge build up in the engine. Switching to detergent oil will start removing that sludge. From what I've heard its possible for the sludge to plug up holes that should have oil flowing through them and then you have a problem. If you know the engine doesn't have a sludge build up then I would make the switch as detergent oil is better oil. If it has a build up then I would play it safe and get the engine cleaned out before switching.

Why are you useing non detergent oil in it ?
Did you buy it from an old farmer that told you that was all it ever had in it ?

Ron,
If you run detergent, you will reduce the amount of crankcase sludge buildup. Not a bad thing in my book. HTH Kevin C
