How big of a plow will a 41 M handle. will be plowing in clay like ground. The tractor doesn't have a three point hitch. So I would have to get a pull type . What is the best kind to get?

1940's M's usuall were sold with a Little Genius #8 type 3-14" plow, in 1950 we bought a '48 W-6 in good but stock condition (248 cu. in. engine) Well, rthe "old 6" could pull this plow okay in 3rd and 2nd gears but you could tell it was pullin' it's guts out and the plow did'nt stay in the ground any too good either. We traded for a new John Deere #55 3-14" plow and-man, what a difference, the "old 6" literally ran with it and with decent points(shares) it plowed anywhere. It's bad to say here but I'd try to find a green plow with yellow wheels and take 'er easy on yer good old M.

If your M has a larger bore than it came out with it should pull 3-14's with no problem. The M was rated a 3-14' tractor.

Plowed for years in central Indiana with 3-14s on an M. The M had an M&W overbore kit, and was (still is) a very free-running tractor. We farmed with it pulling 3-14s and the SM pulling 4-14's. The M would go ANYWHERE in 2nd, most places in 3rd, and while it would pull the plow in 4th, we didn't, because it tends to beat the pilot bearing right out of the transmission! Most of our ground has very little clay, except for a few spots. One day when Dad was doing some maintenance on the SM and not looking, I put the M on the 4-14 Moline plow... To his surprise and my pleasure, the old M would still go anywhere in 2nd, and most places in 3rd! In fact, it handled it every bit as well in 3rd as the SM because 3rd gear in an M is a little slower than an SM. I've got a 3pt on the M now, and use it to pull a 3-16 mounted JD plow.

I have a stock M and pull 3-14's in soil with quite a bit of clay. I plow in second gear without any problems. Our soil is too stoney to plow any faster anyway.

If your M is stock, I would go with two 14 or 16 inch bottoms. If it has been modified for more power, it should handle three. In the hard Missouri ground where I grew up, we used two 14s. The MD handled that in hard ground in third gear with no problem.

I'm pretty sure that the M was rated to pull a three bottom plow such as the little genius in its 3 bottom configuration

Pulled 3-16's in third, no sweat. Could run in 4th if I was in a hurry.
