This should start something. In head-to-head competition and in stock form, which tractor would pull the heaviest stoneboat:

W-4 vs. H
Super W-4 vs. Super H
W-6 vs. M
Super W-6 vs. Super M
Super W-6-TA vs. Super M-TA

Gentlemen, start your engines.....

ok guys, this debate can go on for ever. All IH men like their tractors. Same with John Deere. and so on. I like to go to the tractor shows and enjoy looking at all makes and models. A lot of things depend on which tractor will out pull another. does it really matter. as long as they get the job done and thats my opinion.

I think if set up to pull, I think both would be able to do resonably well, I pull at local pulls where we pull stone boats on asphalt, we use a percentage basis, and actually it seems the row crop tractors do better, but we have one puller who pulls a W4 and he is pretty competitive, we pull for the most part stock tractors as higher horse power doesn't help as much on dead weight on asphalt, I have a stock farmall H i run that still has the distalite head, pistons and carberator, it has trouble with power when it gets to around 200% but I got second place with it 2 out of 4 pulls this year in the farm stock class, My 1939 John Deere A is also stock and I did run out of power with it one time this year. I got one second place with that in the antique class.

I don't have any numbers in front of me but I'm thinking the W series might do better because I'm thinking they may have more weight. Just a guess.

My money is on the W's, doesn't really make sense on paper, but a little experience; last year my boss bought a pretty rough JD 620 std, it sounded like it was gonna die until under load...then look out, beat all of the 620 and 720 rowcroppers hands down. We can eliminate the H, have you ever seen an H that wasn't heavily modified pull worth a darn? Not me! Another reason I'm betting on the standards is this, we saw a 650D show up last year at our county fair, ugly, and just unhitched from the spreader (probably coulda' dropped down a class if he'd cleaned her), hooked up and started down the track, when they waved the flag after a full pull, she hadn't even broken a sweat.
If they hadn't flagged, he'd still be heading South, maybe Fla. by now! Pete

You Junk Deere guys just wish thats what the IHs could pull. I heard a good story not to long ago. A guy to a F-30 to a tractor pull. Two guys just got done pulling two 4230 John Deeres. They made it about half way. The guy with the F-30 hooked up and pulled the sled out. The John Deere guys never pulled again because that F-30 beat them. Another one. A guy had an M strait off the farm. 6 4020s and 2 3020s pulled before he did. They didn't make it to the full pull mark. The guy with the M hooked up to the sled and pulled it out. That must have been real embarrasing for you JD guys. I have read and heard that the new Case IH tractors are alot better that the new JDs anyways. I believe it. My grandfather has a 4020 and a 3020 that we used to farm with. Talk about pieces of junk. Everytime we needed them they wouldn't start or we would have to work on them. We replaced them with a Farmall 806 and 856. We also used older Farmalls to replace them. Any of our IHs would run circles around those Junk Deeres.

Yep, wet kittens, Barbie's Fun Car, maybe a sliver or two, not to mention those little red wagons they sell in the drugstore for ten bucks.

Heh! You nailed it, Guy. Let's toss a couple of Hot Wheels cars in that little red wagon and make it really tough.

Trot on over to the JD board and see what IH guys post. Look under "RE STAND UP FOR THE JOHN DEERE NAME" posted by one KW T600. With you guys looking for a fight like that are you surprised?

Honestly, a good debate, based on realistic claims is fun. Posting in illiterate caps, and screaming cliches is not fun. I don't mind the civil opinions posted by reasonable people. I will be happy to compare my fine 1954 JD 70 gas tractor with anyone who wants to talk Super M.

Carrying on like second grade schoolyard bullies is not what these forums should be about. I can make plenty of honest claims for my tractor without haveing to insult yours. I am sorry your favorite brand died 17 years ago. There is no need for vindictiveness.

It is all to easy to get mad and shout abuse. There are a lot of other subjects that are worth getting worked up about. Most of my friends want to argue politics. Politics actually matter. Whether you like 50 year old red tractors or green ones is inconsequential. I actually enjoy most antique tractors. I can't afford one of each, so if you do a good job on yours, I will be happy to admire your work as I've been there and done that too and I know what is involved.

I agree, old tractors obviously interest all of us or we wouldn't be here. I prefer JD, you prefer Farmall, and joe blow over likes Allis Chalmers. Good for all of us. This discussion forum is to see if we can help out a fellow tractor nut when he is having difficulty.

Guy, let's leave the hot wheels out of the little red wagon as it may be too much!!!

Happy tractoring!!!

John

I agree. An interest in old tractors should bring us together with common interests. If we have a preference (I do) it should be for fun. I enjoy looking at them all when I go to a show.....

I like the H and M to use. I have an H and an M that I use. I have used my share of them. Course, I have a W-4, a Super W6-TA, and a W-9. These are nice tractors when they are restored. The W series are nice to have because they are rarer and worth more than the Hs and Ms. The W series would be hard to use because they are hard to turn. If you had big fields, they would be nice. It don't make much difference to me, because I like all of them. I'm just 16, but this is my opinion.

I have to stick with the H and M's on this one. If you hook up short you can bring up the front end transfering the weight to the rear tires. You can not do that with the w series. I do not care for that series and would not defend it exept that it is a farmall thus making it superior to the the rest. But inside the family they rank low on my list of favorite tractors. I pull my H with duels at the local tractor show and it gives a very good show.

If that's true, why did a W-4 pull 300+ lbs. more than an H in the Nebraska Tests? I've seen Wheatland McCormicks pull the front ends off the ground. Theu always seemed to get more traction, in my opinion.
