I have Farmall 504 that was given to me for free. I was told that the engine ran but would not drive, but the price was right. After digging into we found that the clutch pack before the TA was totally blown apart and was in pieces in the housing including the arms on the carrier. I am currently searching for the replacement parts online in order to fix it. The one question I have is, how can I check to make sure the TA itself is in working order before I put it back together? Before we took apart the TA clutch assembly we were able to hold the clutch carrier in place, turn the engine over by hand and the tractor would move forward and backwards. When we release the carrier and let it spin, the tractor would not move. The planet gears from what we can see look good and do not have any wear or have any broken gears. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

See the second & third posts. Sounds like you need to do the rear split and repair/replace the TA unit.

Ok I just finished putting the tractor back together. I replaced the entire TA clutch among other parts and the main clutch. We tested turning the shaft before we put it back together and it seemed to be working fine, at least we thought. After putting it back together we tested it by turning the engine over by hand and here were the results.

Worked fine in reverse gear with TA disengaged and engaged. Worked fine in forward gear with TA disengaged, but would not move forward in a forward gear with TA engaged. It would start to move forward then the TA clutch housing would start to spin and it would stop moving.

We have the feeling that it could be the over run clutch, but I would like some input before we tackle that one. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

D Slater is correct. It will required second split to replace the one way clutch (on the trans end of the TA. Kevin Meier (a frequent contributor) sells heavy duty one way clutches and the other parts you need. If the gears and shafts are tight and have good clearances, it can be reused. Checking it is not just visible. Jim

Thank You guys for your advice, you helped me decide, I will definitely split it again and look into the other clutch and the TA. Lot better now then after I get it back together and so far I only have about $500.00 into this tractor. I have been debating on whether or not to purchase the TA delete kit, but in a way I would like to keep it. Does Kevin Meier have a web site?

Any and all advice or help is always appreciated.

Doesn't need T/A clutch to move if the T/A unit is good. If you turn engine and tractor doesn't move with transmission in gear, see if the carrier is turning backwards. Carrier should only turn one way and lock the other way when good.
