OK Gents!

This old man has been repairing and renewing about everything imaginable on a 1940 H. Brakes, generator, starter motor, clutch adjustment, bushings/bearings in front bolster, fan hub, raditor, removed drawbar and added a 3pt hitch. My problem....? I have ended up with a roll pin measuring one and seven eighths long by five sixteenths in diameter. So help me, I can't remember where in blazes I punched it out of. I'm almost afraid to start the old girl up for fear the wheels fall off. Reckon any you gents recall such a pin and its proper residence on that model?
Be advised, I had not opened up the engine case!

Does it have an overrun clutch on the PTO and if so did you take it off? Mine is kept in place with a roll pin.

TIM:

By thunder you hit the nail on the head. I had bought a new O.R. Clutch to accomodate that 3pt hitch, and sure nuff, I recall having laid it on the bench with the other nuts and bolts. Tnx a million. My memory ain't what it used to be. I owe ya one! "TU"

How about steering shaft universal joint. I think the replacement parts used roll pins to hold the front half on the shaft. You may have replaced it with a bolt. It's a good thing you only found a roll pin and not a rolling pin.

Undertaker,
You really have these young whippersnappers guessing!!! I wonder how many know roll pins weren't commonly used in 1940? They may not have even been invented yet. Have you recently repaired a kitchen appliance for your wife? That roll pin didn't come from the H. George Willer

Geo! For sure, you are the best educator this forum has witnessed. I guess a little clarification ought to be offered. It is not a roll pin as referred to in these days, but has a open slot down the length of it when not compressed. As an old widower for fifteen years I don't operate on washers and driers anymore. Spend most of my time trying to keep the old girl running in a contest to see which of us expires first. She's running out of parts and mine are completely out of stock at my age?

Just a guess. Does a 40 H have band brakes? Pin securing band end? I guess a push on each brake peddle would tell.

Did it come out of the cranshaft pulley on the front of the motor where the hand crank engages to the crank?
