706 Farmall starter..need help asap

Just got a reman starter, and it is working correctly but just touches the top of the ring gear. The ring gear is perfect, so am at a loss.. all the sites seem to show that it should be a 10 tooth starter drive which it is, but it seems would need to be a 12 or 14 to mesh properly.
The starter I removed I did not count the teeth, but it was only working about 50% of the time, and was old and full of rust. It was stamped 1108334, which the IH dealer cross referenced to 104193a1r as a rem replacement.
This is a 291 cu in '67 706, do I possibly have an incorrect ring gear and need a different sized drive? Any help would really be appreciated. The starters and drives on this site don't give much info either, so I am at a loss. All I know is I need my 706 up and running!!!!!!

The place you bought it from needs a call. The number of teeth and operation may not be related. The diametral pitch, pressure angle, and number of teeth make it work. JimN

I got it from an IH/Case dealer, everything seems kosher, but from my cruder measurements seems like it is about 1/8" high off of the ring gear, 1/4" off of the bottom of the ring gear teeth.

Take it back, there are two different starters but eiether will work provided they have put the correct drive in it. Difference is in the drive end housing. I have run into rebuilts where they had wrong drive in,(different number of teeth) switched drives and worked and then many years later put on different starter with other drive and it worked fine. Hard to tell by looking at the starter but if you could do some fine measurements you can tell the difference. Ring gear is same on 263 and 291.Hy Capacity lists the two different starters, one for 263 and one for 291 Now, it up to you to argue with the parts man.

Did you take the starter you purchased back and compare it with the oue you took out. Its pretty hard to see from here how many teeth the old versus new and also the overall length of the drive.

Betcha Janicholson hit the nail right on the head... It's got the right number of teeth, but the wrong size teeth.

Unfortunately it's going to have to go back.

Yes, the CaseIH website lists 104190A1R for the 706 gas.

They gave you the wrong starter. I can't figure out what the 104193A1R starter is for yet, but I'm going to look.

I ran into this same problem a few years back. The starter drive housing that you have in the rebuild unit is for a 560 tractor. The 706 & 806 gas tractor takes a different starter housing. They look the same but if you look very close and do some measuring the shaft and drive is closer to the ring gear in the 706 version when compared to the 560 tractor. Good luck, Please post back when you get her fixed.

Yep you guys were right, I needed the 104190, which is exactly what was said, the hub is offset a bit to bring it closer to the ring gear. Will put it in today and make sure, but should be the trick. Thanks soooo much for all the quick replies, I figured the collective knowledge here would know what the problem was. And beware, I just got a wd45 a/c so I'm sure more questions to come on that critter!
BTW heres a pic of my baby after I painted it a few years ago, wish it still looked that nice but she is a working tractor, not a parade queen :)
