seal positioning

(quoted from post at 16:46:15 02/05/20) I am going to double up on the seal for my SMTA live power pto. I know this sounds stupid, but would you put the first one in backwards and the second in correctly? Or put both in the same way? Thanks, Ellis

Either way should work, installing them opposite, one would act as a sort of "dust lip".

Or, both lips facing inward would be extra protection against oil leakage (if that's a problem).

Either way, put a dab of wheel bearing grease in the area between the lips.

To be more clear, that would be inner seal lip facing INWARD, outer seal lip facing OUTWARD.

On my 300u I replaced the PTO seal about 18yrs ago. The original seal looked much better made and I worried the new one would leak, but it never has. I have over 1000hrs more on it since then. I usually try to reposition a seal a little further in(if possible), away from the groove the old seal made. My new seal was a CR brand made, which in my experience, are the best. I'm not sure that I would try 2, except as a last resort. Mark.

The most experienced old guy at my CNH dealers told me to install seals so the groove U-shape fills up with the grease. It's the difficult way to install them, I know. But I do it and it works just fine.
