Hydraulic Thumb Question - no control valve

Take a look at the thumb on the parts tractor I just bought

You can see that it's plumbed into the bucket circuit - with what looks like a flow valve, no additional lines or valve at the operators station. Any ideas how this works?

It would be my guess that when you open (tip)the bucket the thump opens,,when you close (crowd)the bucket the thumb closes, your young driver seems to be keen to have a go.

Thanks AJ that was my guess too - just not sure how well that would work in the real world, seems that thumb would either be in the way or not where you need it..

Yup the boy's mad I'm parting this machine out to fix the other one - he wants to keep everything... Wonder where he gets that???

I would just put a valve out on one of the lines at the thumb. when you don't want to use it you could just open the thumb then close the valve to lock the pressure on it so it wont cycle with the bucket, or set it at a certain spot like a manual thumb. like i said about flow going to the lowest resistance path it could occasionally be a pita but most of the time i bet it would work nice. I'm with the boy, looks like a pretty solid machine. what engine is it that you needed for your 530?

I might be able to put a cable on the flow valve to accomplish the same thing - hmm let me think about that for a while..

188D - real low compression and spun a rod bearing in my other machine - bought this one for the motor..
