I am looking at a 1979 or 1980 D3B dozer. It has 80% under carriage; 6 way blade; pedal steer; new clutches; 3600 hours. The owner says it is a good work horse but if run real hard it can use up to two quarts of oil by blow by. Does anyone know if this engine has sleeved cylinders or not? Also is asking $9500.00 for machine. I will be going to look at the machine on Sunday is there anything I should be looking for on this dozer?

Any suggestions or opinions welcome.

TIA

Leonard

It likely has a 3204 engine that is bored in the block/not sleeved with removable liners but can be bored out and dry sleeved back to standard on a rebuild. make sure it will steer with a light toe pressure.

You can put better aftermarket pistons(IPD)in it with 3 rings instead of 2. It doesn't have sleeves and can be bored up to .040? over. After that it can be bored and sleeves put in. 3204's and 3208's were notorious for blow by because they only used 2 ring pistons. One shop told me that you can't even do an accurate blow by test because of it. 2 quarts in how many hours use? As far as the undercarriage, who's saying it's 80%? Unless they have the actual measurements to conmpare to the original, don't believe it! I also wouldn't believe the hour meter. I don't think it should need new clutches in 3600 hours? If the hours are accurate, 80% worn undercarriage would make more sense unless it's already been replaced but then I think the price would be a little higher.

Probably honing the cylinders and replacing the
pistons with 3 ring pistons is the best and
cheapest way to go. Never believe an hour meter. If
this machine has been used by a serious contractor
figure about 2000 hours a year. Hours meters are
actually a service meter to keep tabs on you
running time between service.

Well I bought the dozer and brought it home. I will post some pictures soon.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I have my service, owners and parts manuals ordered. Can someone please tell me what fluid to the unit uses in Transmission, Hydraulic and rear end?

Thanks and have a great day.
