Ford 555 engine

I have purchased a Ford 555 1983 TLB that has a knock in the engine. I have a mechanic that has tore down Detroit and Cummings engines but this is the first Ford engine he has tore down. In the service manual it shows timing marks on camshaft, crankshaft , camshaft drive gear and the injection pump drive gear. The mechanic says the engine has been gone thru recently and has had the crank turned. The problem he is having is the timing gear marks do not line up. He says it looks like the engine is 180 degrees out of time. The engine starts and runs but does not have a lot of power, the oil pressure is good. Can a engine be out time like that and still run. Also, the injection pump gear does not have a dot or mark on it.

Any thoughts or comments.

TIA

Highly unlikely that it 180° out and starting, the gears will omly line up every 20 revolutions or so because of the ratio"s, check the fine timing of the pump,I am not familiar with the 555 engine but it will have a timing mark on the front pulley or the flywheel, look up the degrees injection starts before TDC,turn the engine to the mark with #1 cylinder on compression stroke, remove the timing window from the injector pump and see if the line matches with the end of the circlip,if not loosen the pump and twist the body,is this a three cylinder engine.
Good luck

I missed the bit about the pump gear not been marked, that happens when the gear is used on different models of same make, when the gear was fitted the other marks should have been lined up and the engine put to TDC compression stroke #1 cylinder with the pump timing window removed the mark on the shaft should be lined with the snap ring and then the gear fitted, the gear should then be marked to make it easy the next time, yours must be very close to where it should be when its starting, cant be more than a tooth or two out, check to see the pump is lined up when you got it at TDC,the firing order for a 3cyl is 123.
