I am looking at a 1981 TD8E Ser # 9502. The unit is really in good shape for its age. The problem is 3rd gear is out of it in forward and reverse. I have talked to two mechanics and they both have told me that it won't hurt anything that most people block 3rd out anyway. They said more than likely someone has tried to shove something heavy in 3rd and burnt the clutches up. We pulled the inline screen and cleaned it. The unit runs and has lots of power. I would like to get your alls opinion on this before I purchase the unit.

TIA

Leonard

things don"t get better ,get ready for a repair if the 3rd pac is out those parts are still turning and may come apart and jam up or ruin other parts. check pressure should be at least 90-100psi. need to remove floor, this unit has a torque converter . good luck.

Really won,t hurt anything IF you keep it out of third. If you did not find bearings and hard parts in the strainer should just be clutch packs. For years if you pulled the tns and brought it to out shop we would re sel and put new clutch disk in the unit for $ 2500.oo IF it had no hard parts like gears or shafts damaged.
Several of the guys that used to work ih around here still doing it in a shade tree status. Of more concern now is the parts for the ih 239 engine are getting harder to find. Most people around here are converting the old c and e td 8s to cummings 4 cyl

There was no metal in the screen. The stuff in the screen would remind you of coffee grounds.

Thanks for the reply and have a great day.
