How to spot dishonest sellers...

I was looking on Machinery trader regarding another post. Do people selling equipment really think buyers are blind? I know some people don't look too close but when an ad for a 1980 Fiat Allis HD31 descibes it as a low hour machine with only 3797 hours, it's a little hard to believe when they show a close up picture of a Caterpillar hour meter. 425 HP dozers aren't usually bought to sit around and do nothing. Dave

OK, you made me research it. Yeah, maybe the dealer felt the buyer would be dazzled by that new paint job, 425 HP and overlook the CAT Hour meter. Sometimes you just can't figure. Very observant on your part!

I ran a 31 with cab on a jobsite one winter. Absolutely no vision of the blade, all "seat-of-the-pants" operation. It would hog out XXXyards of dirt each day, but at the end of the day it took me and others 1+ hrs to clean the tracks each night so it would move the next day. It always started well, even in near zero conditions with a whiff of eather. You might ask how we operated in winter conditions. We were preping a slopped site for a very large building and I was cutting down the hillside and pushing to a cat trackhoe that was loading the spoils into two articulated back dumps, which transported it to a low section on the site where it was put in, in lifts and compacted. It was a nice job, except for the track cleaning, on all equipment, but everyone pitched in to make sure the next day started without issues.

Why do you say "clean the tracks so it would move the next day"???

I've never run a dozer, so I'm not following what you have to watch out for??

Thanks,
Howard

frozen debris like mud ect can litteraly freeze the dozer in place overnight as the stuff freezes on the track chains, rollers and sprockets ect preventing the machine from moving

They make track shovels just for cleaning out the tracks. It's not just in frozen conditions. Anytime there is a build of material such as dirt, mud, sand, snow or any other material, it should be cleaned out as much as possible at the end of the day because it causes increased wear on the undercarriage and can put more stress on the final drives and other components. Mud for example can pack around the top carrier roller and prevent it from turning which will cause a flat spot on it. Dave

Part of the problem does fall on buyers. Dealers and others are still slapping fresh paint on a pile of poop, and buyers are still not understanding that there is a worn out hunk of junk under that new paint.
As for hour meters on any equipment, who is kidding who? Unless the seller owned the piece since it was placed in to service, they cannot honestly state how many hours are on it. Hour meters break, get changed out, etc.
It is funny how the same sales tricks still work after so many years and so many people that have gotten riped off.
