Hi all
I am thinking of buying a 4500 Ford TLB.
Of the older Ford TLB's; what would be considered the most dependable?
I am hoping to purchase around a 70's + unit.
What years were the 4500 produced?
Thanks
Brian

4500 was produced from 65 to 75... roughly.
If it was me I'd move forward to at least a 555. It's not a lot more money, if any... and I think that will get you a modular frame machine instead of the unitframe of the 4500. Should be easier to work on... which is something to think about with an old hoe. I think you'll find the 555 is probably a good bit more capable as well.

I would not buy a 4500 with a forward reverse shuttle. They are prone to going out and it is a big ticket item to fix. If you find a 4500 that is standard shift they are a workhorse. I have one and like it very much.

I've got a '75 4500 TLB(740/755)and love it, it's been very reliable and i think no harder to work on then any other piece of equipment.

what are you looking to do with it?? home use, side jobs??

I've got a Ford 755 that I've had for about 6 yrs now. Real dependable. Had to replace a radiator, water pump, hydraulic hoses but considering it's age (30 yrs old) and what I paid for it, I'm real happy. As for capabilitites, it's a workhorse and it's built like a tank. It's not a "mudder" and I've gotten it stuck a few times down to the axles, but considering it weighs almost 19000#, it was fairly easy to get itself out, using the bucket and backhoe to lift itself out of the mud to where I could put planking under the wheels. Aftermarket parts are available so you don't have to go to NH for a lot of them. Example, the radiator from NH was over $2000 but I got brand new aftermarket one for around $300. It's a strong machine and paid for itself by me putting in my own driveway with it. Also great for pulling stumps. I'm with Rod. I'd look for at least a used 555.
