Case 310G diesel hard starting

Got to have starting fluid to get it going. Once running it's fine. Wonder if anyone knows what to look for first.
I'm thinking it's going to be something to do with the injector pump.

If it starts well once it's hot, I doubt the pump itself has anything to do with the problem. When that Roosamaster/Stanadyne pump gets worn, it will start good cold and lousy when hot.

First thing I'd check is the pump timing. You might try loosening the mounts and advancing it a bit and see if it starts better.

Just keep in mind that low compression is usually what creates the need for "ether starting." And, then, using ether all the time does even more damage and makes the engine seem to be "addicted" to it. A worn engine with scored cylinder walls if not real bad - will need ether to start and then run fine once warmed up.

That all being said, low fuel delivery and/or wrong timing could also be the problem. But, if it runs fine when warmed up - and you can see a puff of blackish smoke when you really work it hard, and it starts fine when hot- I doubt there is anything wrong with the pump. If you cannot get any black smoke out of it, then you need to turn up the fuel delivery a bit - and that might also make it start better.

As a 40 year heavy equipment operator, we had a name for starting fluid DEATH BREATH!!
Sure way to ruin a motor spray the starting fluid to it!

It doesn't start hot, either.
The seller mentioned something about fuel "flowback"?
Yes, I absolutely hate using ether!
The bottom of the engine allegedly was rebuilt, crank, bearings, rings, etc. but the head was not. I have no black smoke but some blue so if low compression is the problem it'll probably need a valve job, not looking forward to that
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into the timing, should be 8 BTDC.
How do I increase the fuel delivery?
Right, I don't have any manuals on it yet.

If "flowback" is the problem, the fuel will have air in it every time you try to start it. If so, if would skip and sputter something awful, and finally clear up after running it awhile. It also should start fine, when shut down and quicly restarted. If it does not restart well hot, and it's cranking over OK, you've got low fuel delivery problems.

If you DO have a flowback problem, it's an easy fix. If you don't have a bad fuel line somewhere, you probable need a new check vavle on top of the injection pump and if the engine has a fuel pump- it too might have bad check valves.

Since blue smoke is rather constant I lean toward the low compression theory. After I check a few other things first and find a way to get hold of a proper compression tester I'll make a decision whether to do the valve job myself or get it done elsewise.
It doesn't restart just after shutting off.
I have good flow to the Roosa.
Ill check the timing and may advance it a little anyway to see if it helps.
I changed all filters and fluids so no problem there.
I haven't checked injector pressure yet.
