Need a charging system expert....

My 94 Thomas skid steer with a Kubota engine stopped charging. I wasn't sure what was wrong but took the alternator in and it needed to be rebuilt($120). Put it back on and still didn't charge so I took the external voltage regulator off. A little history, Thomas machines of that vintage were famous for having voltage regulator problems. I had gone through about 3 others back in the 90's but did find one that lasted till now. It is electronic but it is a larger size like the old mechanical ones. A good auto electric shop has given me about 5 regulators to try and none of them work right. He says it's a waste of time to call the suppliers warehouse(Wilson)to see if they have one like the one I took off. His book shows nothing like it. If I remember right it was the same number as the smaller electronic one but for some reason worked a whole lot better. There is no number to be found on it. What can I do short of changing the alternator? After a week and half, I'm getting ticked off with the darn thing and need to use the skid steer. Anyone ran into a problem like this before? Dave

It would involve changing the alternator, but one wire 10SI Delcos are readily available for under $100.
As for your existing setup, only thing I can think of is a bad ground.

Need to know if it is a "type A" or "type B" . I see no reason once the type is known, a regulaor can't be found to work. I have interchanged regulaors between Dodge,Fords Belarus and GM. External regulated alternators work on same principle. on Internal regulated alternators, connection have to brought outside the case.

the real problem could be bad ground or loose connection.

Nippon Denso 25 amp. The guy at the auto electric place told me to bring the whole machine to him. He is very well respected for knowing what he's doing. Even on the test bench he had trouble getting a regulator to work right with the alternator. He remembers they were a real pain back in the day. Another place told me that the quality of electronic stuff has gone way down hill with a lot it coming from overseas. It's just really frustrating trying to figure out what the heck is wrong. Dave

Is that the little per-mag alternator that uses a combo rectifier/regulator like a used with the flywheel alternator of a small OPE engine with 2 AC wires from the alternator to the regulator?

Look at the 5th one down on your link. I think it's similar(maybe the same) and uses an EXTERNAL regulator with a 6 wire plug. Dave

Shouldn't be real tough or costly to swap that stupid setup out for an internally-regulated unit.

Probably not but I already spent $120 having it rebuilt and didn't think it would be so difficult to find a decent regulator. Dave

Lavoy....Do you know of anyone that makes a 10SI with a tach drive [Ferguson style] that I can put on a Ford 4000..Been pulling my hair out with the old Lucas "genny"..They need the tach drive for chemical spraying at the vineyard.. Thanks, Roy
