Guy's on my '75 series 755 backhoe on the crowd cyl it's missing that dust scraper seal in the end of the cap (see pic) i'd really like to replace it so it don't drag dirt into the packing, now i also really don't want to tear apart the cyl just to replace that so do they make some sort of two piece seal i can install???

or what do you advise for this???

I think you need to take the cylinder completely apart to put in the wiper seal. Never heard of 2 piece seals for hyd. cylinders. Dave

(quoted from post at 13:34:29 03/09/10) that is a simple cylinder to work on. it appears you could use a little work on the rod, maybe rechrome.
so are we agreeing the only way is to disassemble the cyl??, i really would rather not disassemble it,couldn't that disturb the packing and possibly cause a future leak?? how critical is it that this seal should be there??, the cyl is nice and dry operating hate to change that.

yea there's a few spots the chrome is missing, what causes that and how expensive is it to re chrome?? been like that many many years no issues.

Cylinders are hard chrome plated which is more involved than standard chrome plating. If you take the cylinder apart, it's best to replace all the seals in it. Maybe you could get the right seal and with a very thin blade, cut it in half so you could put it in? You'd have to use a little silicone or bearing mount to hold it in place but MAYBE it would work and help keep dirt out of the cylinder. If the cylinder never gets dirt or anything else on it, you might be OK for quite awhile though. Dave

Thanks Dave, the pitting is minor at that the size of a pin head not the sharp point end in spots over the ram here and there,i guess im not to concerned with that as the wiper seal.

looks like a ton of seals, and pricy...

Looks to be about 12 to 15 Dollars worth of seals at a hydraulic shop. take pictures, mark everything, have seals matched at shop, and reinstall. Easy.

What seals you thinking? there's lots of them i see,i may just take the cyl in, i heard it's easy to pull apart but getting back together is the tough part.

thanks carogator,

anybody else have other ideas you want to add?? maybe someone who has worked on this type cyl before?

all the seals.
I have pulled mine down and done them. If you buy a kit it will cost about 55 or 60 bucks.
get seals matched up at a hydraulic shop(large one), will be 12 to 15 bucks. to get that cylinder built will be about 150 to 200. Takes a lot of torque on the rod nut and the gland also.
The big shops will sell you the seals and show you just how they go back. some seals are flat or concaved and go in just one way. looks complicated till you see how it is done.

K thanks again, going to call a cylinder repair shop tomorrow not to far from me and just get a price, but i don't know just may live with it until it starts leaking, then deal with it,been like this for years.

i was just hoping there would have been like a 2 piece wiper seal or somehow to make it work was the point of this thread.
