JD 450 Winch. Need Help

Hello, I have a 450C with an older 450 winch on it. The winch hasn't worked since I got it. I am trying to get the winch going. I have 450
service manual that has this winch in it. It's a 3325 with the older spool-valve control. You check the pressure on the outside of the housing cover that covers the brake. Should be 1000 psi @ 1900 rpm. Here's the problem.
When I release the brake (free spool) I get 0 psi and brake does not release. When I wind in the drum, I get 600 psi and then it fades down to 0 psi. The brake area is dry and brake cylinder not leaking. Do I need to look for trouble in the control valve or the pump area first? I have the service manual but I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks for any help.

First, what exactly do mean by an "old spool valve?"

The 3325 originally came with a rotary valve that comes in a little square box and bolts to the back of the winch housing. No spool and nothing but trouble.

Deere had so many problems with those rotary valves, they sold change-over kits to use a tractor-mounted spool valve instead. If that is what you have, it's the "new" setup, not the "old" setup.

If you have the original rotary valve - I'd say that's your problem, because the symptoms you describe are exactly what they did - and there is NO good fix other then replacement.

If you have the later spool valve, I'd check the pump and pickup screen before anything else. It's a tiny little Webster gear pump with a screen that can get plugged.

I meant it had a spool valve. I said older because my 450 service manual shows a 3325 with spool valve and my service manual for a 450C shows the 3325 with a rotary valve and the 450 is older. The winch I have has a spool valve and a brake side cover like the one in my 450 service manual. The winch in my 450C service manual has a rotary valve and the brake side cover is different than my winch. Someone put the older 450 winch on my 450C before I got it.
I have a spool valve. I will check the pump and screen first.
Thanks,

i have a 450c also with the winch, this sounds stupid but mine has a " sweet spot" in the lever. if you move the lever all the way engaged it want work for crap, you have to play with it and it will kick in. Just a thought.

To be techincal, Deere started out with spool valves on the 1st power winches. Then went to rotary, then back to spool valve again.

I don't know what the other poster has on his winch, but the rotaries are known for having "sweet spots" and you have to play with the controls to make them work - until they finally quit altogether. Seems Deere did away with them just when the "D" series came out and I had to update an awful lot of winches on Bs and Cs. Not a recall, just on an as-needed basis.

The winch I have must be one of the first ones. I"ll check out the pump and screen first. Maybe that"s the problem.
Thanks,
