D5 - 9U Need to Pull the Radiator

This spring I bought a CAT D6 9U. It was used for logging - has the Hyster winch, a 9 foot blade and ROPS. We replaced the hydraulic hoses the first week, and dropped the pan to clean it out. We paid $5500 for it and a 600 gallon fire/water wagon. We replaced the hydraulic hoses the first week, and dropped the pan to clean it out.

We ran it over 100 hours this summer clearing light brush and cleaning up burn piles.

We tightened the tracks last week by removing a pad - a good old mechanic showed us how.

The machine heats up way to fast - it is obvious the radiator is the problem. I want to pull it, and rebuild it. This should make it into all the dozer I need for my ranch.

I need advice on removing the radiator - does it come out to the front or to the rear, or does that whole front shroud of heavy steel need to come off?

I love the old mechanic - but if I ask him I end up hiring him, and I know we can do this ourselves.

And, finally - what service and or repair manuals are the best for this good old machine.

Your rediator need maybe just cleanup or the fan belt is too loose and if you have to removed
he has to be removed complet up with the side plates and do't forget the 2 oil cooler pipe too.

Thank you, but looking at the fins alone makes it obvious it needs to be pulled - the crust of oil and dirt you cant get to with a pressure washer below the fan and behind the fan shroud is terrible too.

I try to upgrade as I go and we wont work it until next spring now, so taking the time to bring a vital system back up to its full potential is well worth the effort - I just want to put my effort into getting the radiator out without doing a few unneeded steps first.

Being in this line of work, the easiest way out in the long run is to pull the whole nose off. Cat never made a radiator that came out easy & simple. It's a good old machine but not repair friendly. See if your cat dealer can come up with manuals. They have a used parts program, maybe they can come up with a used manual. Vern

Thank You, I though so - after all protecting a radiator in that location takes some doing. I live well off the beaten path - but I will stop at the next CAT dealer I see.

Thank you too. I see parts books - but not manuals - not just at jensales, but in all my searches - I saw some place with manuals on CD-Rom - anyone know that company?

I think we can get the Nose off without a manual.

it is probably cheaper to get the mechanic to do the job. Radiator cores are easy to come by.. Drop the hard nose. and go from there. Most of the bolts holding the tank to the core are coing to break, plan on replacing all of them and use neverseize on the bolt threads. be careful and dont bend the fan blades. a short peice of chain on the center stud that the cap screws on wil balance the radiator. I have a manual and can scan the radiator removal to you.

if you want better quality manuals, either get them from CAT legendary literature and or e-bay, the latter you may find good used originals, serviceman's reference book, operators instructions, and parts catalog. FYI, Jensales is photocopy, spiral bound, catch is they want as much as a quality reprint from CAT, again just an FYI, ps make sure to match the serial number range of the manuals with your tractor S/N

We"ve ordered manuals from Jensales for nearly 10 years and have never had a problem with any of them not being "up to snuff". In fact they have a policy allowing you to return the manual for a refund if it"s not of a suitable quality for you.

Wayne, that's actually good to hear, there have been many that did not have the same experience in the past.

I think the most important thing is to know what you are getting and have it meet your expectations when you receive it, especially when it comes to manuals like these, because often times the print quality, photo reproduction and resolution may not be what the customer expects, especially when the price is the same or close to what O.E.M. or good used originals may cost to obtain, and the fact that often times the quality of those is better. Personally, good used originals are a preference, they are abundant on e-bay.

I think opinions may and will always vary on this, I did an inquiry about their products and asked some very specific questions, some years back and the response was less than satisfactory.

By the same token, there is no intent to trash or discredit Jensales by any means, however I think it's fair to inform people that there are other sources and differences in quality of these manuals.

There are a lot of ACMOC/ACME members that had some other than positive comments about their product over the years, and in fairness, I'll leave it at that, meaning, buyer beware, shop and look around, know what you are getting for the price you pay.

i might be wrong but dont the hard nose tractors rad. come straight up out without removing nose ,just remove hood four bolts and fan ?

You are correct with the cable hard nose units but that feature was lost when the hydraulic hard nose version came along.
