Hough Payloader - Rear Axle - Final Drive problem

Hello, you folks have been kind enough to help me out in the past, and I'm at a loss again and hoping you can help me.

I've got an old (1948-ish) Hough Payloader HM (G) It's the early 90000 serial.

I'm trying to take the rear axle final drives apart to rebuild them and can't seem to get the big ball containing all the U-joints etc off the end of the axle. I've also tried just pulling the entire assembly off, with the axle as part of it. Something somewhere is holding it on and I can't figure it out.

Does anyone have any experience with these machines? I've got it pretty well torn down, I just can't seem to get that last flange off of the axle.

I can get some pictures if that will help.

You stripped everything down to the axle tube? I'm not entirely sure but my massey 470 used to have the axle assembly with five big ball bearings in the front end. To get to mine I had to take the wheel off (not really but anyways), take out all the little bolts on the outer hub, pull that off (breaking the gasket), then from there i can see the axle end, I take the c-clip off, then bend the tab back on the lock washer, then take the axle nut off, then the lock washer, then then undo the second lock washer, take second axle nut off, remove lock washer, there's a washer in there somewhere too, after all that the whole hub and brake assembly will come off in one shot. Then slide the axle out of the housing.....good luck getting those bearings back in there....when mine fell apart i ended up taking the axle ( i did both sides ) to a machine shop and had them fit universal joints from a 3/4 ton truck that i could bolt onto the ends of the axles. Slide the assembly back in, reversal of removal, adjust your wheel stops and your laffin'.......could be different entirely but it's the only way i can help out! good luck chum!
