Rubber Track Questions...

#1 Is it advisable to apply a light coat of grease to the inner "shoes" on the tracks? Or is this just going to attract dust? The inner shoes I am in reference to is the guides that travel between the "vee" in the track rollers. Are these supposed to just be metal-to-metal... Seems harsh.

#2 What is the correct tension to set on a rubber track machine. The tracks are about 6-7 ft long on a Komatsu PC38UU-2. When I got it the tracks were tight on bottom with the machine raised off the ground. I let them off and now have about 2 inches of droop in the centerline of the track. Is this too much or not enough.

Thanks,

Charles

Check your manual, on the tension. I would not apply any oil based product to rubber, might cause it to separate from any steel components in the track. I have over 1200 hours on the tracks on my Asv RC 30, but it uses tracks that have no steel in them, I also run them a little more slack than the book says, but its a different animal than your excavator, and any advice I give might be wrong, compared to your machine.

I would reference the manuals, but there is a slight issue. The Komatsu dealer said he can get them, but only in Japanese. The PC38UU-2 is strictly an Asian market machine and no manuals exist in English. Good machine, can get any part I need, just no manuals.

Thanks,

Look on the dealer's lot, and find one that is as similar to yours as possible to your machine, buy the manual for that machine. I have a gray market kubota tractor that looks like crap, but runs like a top, because I have experience with other kubotas of the same era. Your machine likely just has fewer safety features than those that were imported through the front door, but the mechanicals will be similar if not identical to other machines of that make, and era.

I'll call my dealer again or the one to the north. The one south of me said he tried to cross it but it was kinda on its on. I know the PC35 is close but newer. I am probably going to buy the Japanese Parts Manual, at least the pictures and numbers are ISO.

Thanks again,

Charles
