My Wife's New Toy

We picked this up today. It is a Komatsu PC38UU-2. We intend to use it for building our road, a small pond, clearing our property line for fencing, and the like. The 1st job I did was dig up a 15" sweet gum stump... It did fine.

Nice little backhoe you got the wife there Chas. Looks brand new. Be careful of under foot conditions cleaning the creek, they can get stuck good if they work into soft ground while you are digging.

Actually she bought this one. She felt it was her turn to own a toy too. It is a 1994 Komatsu PC38, 3551 hrs, recently repainted, not one hydraulic leak (yet), pretty tight machine, about 8000 lbs. We gave $10,500 for it.

The only issues I saw before purcahse is 1 bushing on the bucket it a little worn and the lower track rollers are rough. I can get a new bushing machined no prob. But does anyone here have resources for reconditioned or used parts? I do not even know where to look for the manuals.

Thanks,

Charles

Might aswell go to dealer for parts for all you will need. Sometimes cheaper in the long run. When bushings get worn they usually pound out the bore too. Might need to weld and line bore the hole too. You will know when you get it out, a few beads of weld will shrink the old bushing and make it fall out.

neighbor of mine has one of those mini hoe's with a hydraulic brush mower/grinder head on it...that thing will flat clear some fence lines quick.
i been kinda lookin at them...been needing a backhoe anyhow for putting in culverts and the like...county been buying all Komatsu equiptment lately...theyre good machines
hope your wife lets you play with it ;)

Look into installing a thumb on the boom. You cannot believe how much more versatile it makes one of these machines. I have installed several of them for customers and they love them.

I am interested in building a thumb. Welding Man, do you have some dimensions or advice or prints on how to build and where to mount? I only need a manual thumb.

Charles. check out www.excavatorthumb.com. I seriously doubt if you can build one much cheaper than they sell them for and free shipping, and they come with mounting instructions

Two questions:
1. Does your wife have a sister?
2. What's with that cylinder and brace tube on the second half of the boom? Is it supposed to fold the boom for compact storage?

Glad to see someone else loves their wife as much as I do mine. Last Mother's Day, bought her a AC WD45, Birthday = dump truck, Xmas = AC HD5G tracloader maybe this Birthday will = excavator. God I love that woman. Can't help it, she lets me play with her toys on occasion. :)

The cylinder and "brace tube" is for the offset feature. The "brace tube" is actually a linkage. It had a foot pedal that controls a valve to shift the bucket all the way to either side of the machine (inline with the track) for digging next to a wall. I have not needed this yet but I plan to dig the footings for my future house and it may come in handy. Also when using it for a "sky hook" it works like the side-shift on a forklift. Pretty neat huh... It has almost 3 feet of travel either way from center.

Mokicker, you are luckier than I. Previously my wife would moan at every purchase I made. She has made up her mind we are building a house this year (got 50 acres and 1/2 mile of road to build). She found this in the paper and said if it looks and runs good we are buying it!... I took my trailer, did not want it to run away! She wanted it for house, road, pond, pool, ect. I wanted it for ditches, stumps, and clearing the property line for fencing. I think we both came out ok with this one.
