Finding hydraulic leak?

I had a major loss of oil in my skid steer. It drained the tank. I picked up the wheels and pulled it on the bucket to where I could work on it. I can't see any major hole in a hose but one hose that goes into the filter sits against the foil covered foam cab insulation. The crimped on fitting was almost completely rusted away where it was pushing against the cab insulation so I took it off because I need to replace it anyway. Could this have caused the leak? It didn't seem the wettest with oil but the oil would run straight down when the machine was off. I'm going to get the hose tested to see if that's the leak but if it isn't, is there another easy way to find the leak without having to waste a bunch of oil by pumping it out on the ground again? I don't have a lot of room to get real close to look where else it could be leaking. I'm out in the boonies and don't have a shop with all the ameneties. Dave

You won't lose'a bunch of oil' on the floor again if you are looking and watching for the leak? You will see it without much oil loss if it leaks while standing still. Support it safely and(not on the bucket (obviously), and start it up. There must still be oil in it or the bucket would not have raised the machine (that in itself will have removed some oil from the pump area).

I should clarify. I picked it up with the back end in the bucket of my Cat loader to get the wheels off the ground and pulled it backwards with its bucket sliding on the ground. Nothing hydraulic works because all the oil leaked out. I got one new hose that was badly rusted on one side of the crimped end. I will put the new hose on and put some oil in it. If the leak is from somewhere else, I'll loose oil because the leak is in the engine compartment and I need to start it/ turn it over in the cab. It was a pretty good leak to drain 30 litres of oil. Maybe someone will be around that can turn it over for me. I hope the rusted hose was the problem. Dave
