I"ve got an old John Deere Crawler that I"m trying to fix up where I can sell and what seemed to be a simple problem has turned into a nightmare! I guess I should have just sold it like it was and let someone else have all the fun, but I just hate selling something that"s broken. Anyway, what I"m looking for is all the stuff at the left rear of the crawler from the housing that holds the bearing that the shaft that the tracks turn on all the way thru to the housing and also the housing on the other side which is above the belly pan. Even the housing that goes around the big drive gear is broken underneath the crawler! When metal meets metal, something has to give! What I really need too is a schematic drawing that shows exactly how all this stuff goes together. Found an old owners manuel on ebay a few weeks back, but it don"t show any details of how all this stuff goes together. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! David

David, I may be closer and may have the parts you need, but I'll need a serial number as there is a serial no. break on them. Email me and I'll send you a link

Karen, I sent or thought I sent you an e-mail about wanting to find out where the serial number would be on the crawler. I've looked until my eyeballs almost popped out and can't find anything. Knowing the exact spot to look for would sure be a great help. Thanks, David

Yes, I did find your email. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The tag is on the clutch housing. Another quick way to tell is an early serial no. 440 has a sprocket that is outboarded. In a late one, the sprocket is almost flat with very little outboard.

Ser tag is NOT on clutch housing. IT IS on the dash column right infront of shift lever. Where do you live, want to sell it as is? i could use another parts machine.

I checked operator's manual to see where it was located before answering the original post. The manual said it was located on the bell housing. After posting, my husband reminded me that some of the diesels had it on the dash. I did go out in the yard yesterday, and 4 of the 6 440's I looked at had the serial no. on the bell housing. One had it on the dash, and the other didn't have one on it that I could see anywhere.

One last question...would this serial number be a metal tag or is it a number engraved in the metal or what exactly am I looking for. Went out this morning and still can't find anything. Lot's of casting numbers, but no serial #. If I got the casting number from some of the broken housing parts would that help?

Thanks Karen for the help in locating the serial #. I've been off on another tangent the last few days and haven't had a chance to look again to see if I can find it. One of your posts you said the sprocket was "outboarded" on some models and I wasn't sure what that means. Please explain if you would, and I'll try to get out in the morning and see if I can find me a serial number on that machine. Thanks, David

I live in Georgia, and don't really want to sell it for parts. Other than the bull gear bearing problem, it's still a good dozer. The motor (diesel) fires up first time every time and has a strong hydrolic pump. I don't really want to see this machine get chopped up for parts, but make me an offer and if it's good enough, you can sell it any way you like! I don't have any photo's of it, but if you (or anyone else) might be serious about it, I'll get some taken first of the week. I'll look tomorrow for the serial # in the place you said. Thanks.

Thanks Ralph! I'm all the way across the US from you in Georgia. If you'll give me a shout at (912)685-3333 and leave your e-mail address with me or on my machine if I'm not home, I'll get with you and see if we can settle on what I'm going to need and a cost. Thanks, David
