John Deere MC Crawler- need help

final drive question

The left hand drive on my MC is not driving, it turns free and the clutch/brake works.

is there a way to see if I have lost the final, without tearing it apart?

Could the plates in the clutch be slipping?

Any other possible quick fixes? or do I have to tear it apart

Any help is appreciated

hi i've had the same problem! first time i took it all apart to learn how it works! the first place to look i'ed drain the final and remove the lower cover its got eight bolts, than look at the bull gear its got four rivets that hold it to its hub and they will shear with age.with the cover off and another person, run the crawler if there gone you'll see the center hub spin and the gear not. the gear and hub both have half moon recesses in them. there should be washers that are riveted together if the rivets became loose the washers work in there till there to small or fall out!replace them with hard bolts and washers depending what you buy it will take three of four on each side. if you think you have a throw out bearing ajustment problem there an adjust ment bolt deep through the bung hole by your leg you'll need a half inch shocket and a long extention tape the shocket to the extention so you don't lose it! the adjustment is an excentric losen the bolt about a two turns its a short bolt only about five turns so don't over do it. you should be able to move the bearing with the shocket left or right toward the seat is less free play toward the track is more free play you can see that through the cover under the seat.its a square cover four small bolts. if these don't help you your probably going in side! its not as bad as you think to get in there ,first time is slow learning! now i can get in and out in less than four hours and i keep all the parts on hand so i don't have to wait! hope this helps, if not email me rory

Try reaching John Deere publications. I got the number from a kind dealer about 3 years ago and got operators manual, parts book, and shop manual for my 420C. Of course, I lost the number.

Hi Dave,

Are you a brave soul with patcence? It is possible to adjust the presure plate spring tension without taking the finall drives apart. I have done it.

Remove the seat and support bracket then the 4 bolt cover on the top of the drive housing. remove the bung plug in front where your legs are stradling the transmission. You will see the 3 fingers and under each finger as you rotate the drive drum is a bolt that is 5/16" of and inch in diameter with a 1/2" head. Turn the bolt and lock nut as to remove it. Now when you look at this you will realize that your wrench is too long. Go over to the grinder and cut it about 3 inches long. Then grind the narrow the ends of the box part of the wrench to fit. Heat up the end of the wrench that you would normally hold until it is orange hot. Let it cool on it's own, then drill a hole into it and tie a string through it. Cause if you drop it you will have to take the drive apart to get it! Turn each bolt out 1/2 a turn and mark it with some paint. Turn the drum and repeat until all three have been done. If you see a broken bolt then it is game over and you will have to pull the drive. It isn't a big deal and I have done it in an afternoon ( 6 hours) Follow the manual for taking it apart. If you don't then seals will be damaged and you wil have other problems to deal with.

I have a John Deer MC crawler that I had the same problum. On tearing it apart I found that they have a presserplate like a car has. They have 3 fingers that the throughout garning pushes on, these fingers push on 3, 1/4 by 3/4 bolts and the head of one of these broke off (and it would not drive on that side). It was $.20 for the parts and a day amd half of work to fix it. You will half to brake the track and take the bolts out of the finaldrive housing and loosen the clutch/brake then pull the housing off and look at the pressorplate.
