If any of you are ever working on MC's with the carraige bolt pad, I have a heavy washer with a square hole that you can use to repair loose pads. All you have to do is get everything square and tightened up and then run a bead around the perimiter of the washer. This is a far preferable alternative to welding the pads to the rails. If you are going to weld the pads to the rails, make very sure you have good pins and bushings, because MC rails cannot be rebushed in a track press with the pads on.
Also if your bushings have spun in the rails, I can salvage them. It is more time consuming, but at least you can save the expense of coming up with a different set of rails.
Hope this helps,
Lavoy

Lavoy, I'm hopeing to get you to rebush and repin the rails sometime this Summer. The washer method to tighten the pads makes more sense to me than welding pads to the rail. My MC is a great tool. I'll send you a picture. thanks rick

Check your pad bolts, too. They should be grade 8 with NF threads. Soft bolts or coarse threads will always loosen.

Actually most track pad bolts are grade 12.9 with tensile strength rating of 170,000+ PSI. What used to be called "Fedalloy" comes close to that grade in a regular style (non domed head) bolt. Also, depending on the link style, the nuts are often square.

Hope this helps.

Rick: S/N will not help on which rail you have. Do you have 2 bolt or 4 bolt pads. That is, 2-5/8" bolt or 4-7/16"(mightbe 1/2", can't remember for sure), but you get the idea. Tom is 100% right about once the bolts get loose, your done holding the pads on just with tight bolts. I don't understand what you mean by track & assemy. in good condition if pads are loose & you have no adjustment. I'm going to guess your links & pads look good but p&b's are shot. The cheapest way is to put new p&b's in the rail & weld the pads on the links. If no to that buy new or damn good used track groups. HT

If your pads are loose then the track assembly is NOT in good condition. Once the holes start to "oval" on you, you will have trouble keeping your pads bolts tight. If there is no track adjustment left, your pins and bushings are in need of turning at the very least. If they are so far gone that they are no longer tight in the links then the entire rail would require replacing. Year, make, model and serial are required to identify replacement parts.

Guys, thanks for the info and links. It's a John Deere MC crawler, 1949 ser # 10011. The pads are held to the rails by two bolts. thanks again. rick
