450C lost reverse

A couple months ago , I posted that my 450C had suddenly lost reverse and now has a stiff clutch that doesn't seem to be disengaging properly. Someone [Roy?] posted in response that he had previously posted instructions on how to adjust the clutch and take a pressure reading for the reverser. I bought the manual TM1102 figuring those instructions would also be in there but found it more confusing than the original post I'd seen here.

Does anyone have a path to the instructions that have already been posted? I don't seem to get anywhere trying to use the forum search capabilities.

I've pulled the floor plates and started to get the lay of the land as far as the clutch adjustment. I really don't feel the clutch engaging or pushing against the throwout bearing even when fully depressed so I probably need to start there as far as adjusting.

Next thing I noticed was another lever coming out of the clutch housing activated by a control rod coming from back under the seat. Have no idea what this is but it is broken or disconnected. It is slightly to the rear of the clutch adjustment mechanism. Whatever it's function I haven't yet pinned that down from the manual drawings and it looks as if it has been broken for some time so it probably doesn't have anything to do with my reverse problem.

Do you have a Parts Catalog for your 450C? It might help. If not here is the link to the one online for a dozer, which I am guessing your machine is.

450C Bulldozer PC1420

The foot clutch works a declutch valve as well as the engine clutch. There is a brake rod from the brake pedal shaft back to the left brake on that side as well. You will need to better ID this broken mystery rod, we can't see it.

Jim , thanks for the parts manual reference. I was able to go to it and after searching through a dozen or so diagrams, think I've found the mystery lever's purpose. I'll confirm next time I get over to the 450C, but it should be the actuator lever for the left brake. It is attached to a shaft running through the clutch housing to the brake pedal on the right side. Now, as soon as I find the connecting yoke that is missing,I can connect the brakes on the left side to work with the right side. Won't cure the reverser problem but it is another step in restoring the old girl to her former glory.

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Hi Y'all. That clutch linkage on the cross shaft has to move separately from the pedal. A sure clue of it being frozen to the shaft is to back off the 3/4 headed bolt standing upright. The bolt should remain on the metal bump strip that keeps the bolt from backing off while using the machine. If the bolt comes off the bump strip indicates the linkage is frozen to the clutch cross shaft. The cross shaft will probably need to be removed , heated and beat free. A good time to replace the bronze bushings in the clutch housing. Yep the clutch housing has to come out. Ah, yes.. reverse. Is there pressure at the check point between the steer levers ? Can you hear the shift detents click into gears when you move the HLR lever with engine off ? Start the machine , shift 4 speed into neutral , lock the brakes down. At half speed shift the HLR lever to all ranges and watch pressures in each range. Should be 175-180 psi. If forward speeds have pressure and reverse doesn't, something failed. Whether it's the sealing rings at the rear of the clutchpack shaft or actually a failed clutchpack. One way to see if clutches are burned up is to remove the HLR top cover and see if there is freeplay in the clutches. If one is sort of stiff, it's probably burned up and warped. Those buggers are a little complicated , but not as bad as the 550-555 crawlers.
