78 cat d6c power shift metal in magnet

I have a 78 d6c power shift and only had it
A few days. At first the dozer rn and operated fine but then I just stopped moving. I checked the magnet filter and it looked like a bearing was in it due to the needles in the bearing. But after the dozer stopped initially it moved a few times while I tried each gear. It would track about 15 feet then stop again. The fluid look pretty clean and I don t think a lot actually got through to the transmission. My question is where would you guys start and what s your thoughts on it

First thing you need to look at the guarantee, finging bearing metal in the filter is bad news and it indicates a bearing has broken up, you would need to stop using it as it will only be doing more damage, you need to have a Cat mechanic have a look at it as it could have come from anywhere in the power train, hope its from a pump. rotten luck.

By ..guarantee.. I believe he thinks that you have
paperwork from the seller that says they warranty the
machine from certain mechanical problems. Obviously
a used machines especially private party sales rarely
include such arrangements. Cannot help you with your
troubles. The website Antique Caterpillar Machinery
Owners Club may be a good place to look or post your
problems. I am not sure if you can post or do much
else there without a membership.

Had the same thing happen. Transmission pieces
get deposited in the bevel gear housing, right in
front of the suction tube to the magnetic filter. If it is
indeed a needle,I would say it came from one of the
planet gears in the trans. The intermittent operation
of the trans sounds like it jamming up. Open the
magnet filter again and see if there are more parts
in it. Check also the magnet on the drain plug in the
bevel gear housing. After draining bevel gear
housing, remove suction tube and stick a telescopic
magnet in there and see what you can find. I would
not drive it another foot. If it must be moved and
you have something big enough to pull it, let the
engine idle so you have steering clutch pressure,
and hold both levers back while towing; this will
keep the planet carrier from rotating and causing
further damage.

Warranty/guarantee same thing in my neck of the woods, if you bought the machine from a reputable dealer there may have been a warrently on it for ie 90 days usually on used equipment depending the deal you had, if you bought it as seen then it unlikely you will get any help from the seller, it stopping sudden sounds as if something let go in the drive train, rotten luck as I said before, you may have the experience yourself to tackle the job if not a Cat mechanic is called for.
