Case 350 dozer

Talking to a person with a 1979 model Case 350 crawler. I have not looked at it at this time. He tells me that it will not stay in second and third gear. To keep it there you have to tie it back one way or the other. Says that he keeps it in low gear all of the time and uses the shuttle for reverse. Any one have any clue as to why the crawler will not stay in second or third gear without tieing the gear shift back or forward with a bungee cord.. This crawler will be 43 years old. Will parts be hard to find.w
 
By what you are saying I would suspect a bearing has failed, drain the oil from the transmission and look for metal.

do you think it might be the detent balls in shifting forks missing. Look like if someone had been in there might have omitted the detent balls sometime in the past.
 
It would take some guessing for someone reading your post that the transmission has been worked on and that the detent balls are omitted, the detent balls are for sure needed to hold the machine in gear, have a word with the mechanic that worked on the tractor.

I really know very little about the dozer other than what the owner told me. He has it for sale. $9000 price. Kinda interested but but a little wary. He bought it from some one else and has told me all he knows about it.

Look for something else.
Parts are getting hard to find for that machine.
He's wanting way to much money.

Thanks to each of you for your comments they were very helpful in me making up my mind to stay away from this machine. I need a small dozer and will keep looking.
