JD310A interchange with JD310

Well my old worn out 1976 JD310A hydraulic pump has failed............ The rest of the machine is tired, buckets done, lots of cylinders weeping, steering held together with a bandaid, cosmetically trashed, very little electrical works etc. But engine and transmission are solid. . Have a chance to pick up a 1975 (we think) JD310 with a bad transmission, broken gears, hole in housing.

Does anybody know for sure if I can fit my 76 JD310A transmission will bolt up in the 1975 JD310 Hoping so as I would rather spend twice the money and upgrade the machine rather than just buy a pump which by the time I get it here in Canada will run me around $2000 And yes I know how much work the swap is, did the wet and dry clutches in mine 2 years ago.

You need to go to jdparts and write down the three different trans used on the 310 including casting #'s. Then look up 310A and compare #'s. 310A used 2 diffe3rent part #'s and only 1 is the same as 1 of the 310's. It all depends on serial #'s or casting #'s.

Thanks, I see the common denominator of the two machines now so there is at least a chance. Any idea where on the transmission body the numbers are located before I take up the entire floor?

I assume what Denny is telling you is to go by the part numbers. Here is the link to the JD online parts, to get to the 310 you have to click ..New Part Search.. and type in 310. You could look up parts there till the cows come home and still not know if it would fit. It shows three part numbers for the trans case as he says but you have no idea what changed. For and example they may have found a bolt in the case that was 5/16 in the early series had questionable strength for holding some part. So the increase the size to 3/8. So now a 2nd revision case no longer can take the place of the original part number simply because the bolts will not swap. Yet the whole unit would fit with no issue. You are concerned about about the fit of the entire unit because your swapping in your entire rear end and transmission. it is much more likely to fit all together. Can I tell you for sure? No. Yes you are taking on quite an endeavor.

Yup, big job, intent is not to swap diff, just transmission. The other machine is fairly low hours and clean compared to mine. Mine had been flopped over a couple times and worn out before I bought it 15 years ago, it did not get prettier with age lol. It has more than earned its keep around here. Just have to find the numbers on the case now I guess and go from there. Will get the floorboards pulled hopefully Wed. and look then.
