What are they doing?

Couple old photos posted on a bookface history page.

A crawler is towing some sort of machine with a conveyer belt on it. Horse drawn wagons are pulled along side and are filled from the conveyer.

First I was thinking this was maybe a potato digger or sugar beets, etc. This is supposed to be in Renville or Redwood Co, Minnesota.

But, now I am wondering if its some sort of road building machine? Those horse drawn wagons have a sump in the middle for a dump door?

Like a early scraper?

That is a scraper/loader. As time went on
and machines got bigger they found that
could be the fastest way to load and move
dirt under the proper conditions. Some
took huge cuts and loaded big trucks in a
matter of minutes.
