john deere 450 left steering clutch will not engage

Will need a little more info to help you out. Are you saying that the left side will not pull at all? That would be what would happen if the left steering clutch will not engage. If that's the case you possibly have a blown hydraulic line that's inside the left clutch housing that feeds the clutch to engage it. Or are you implying your left steering clutch will not disengage causing you not to be able to turn to the left?

If this is a 450 as he posted the steering is mechanical, with possibly power assist cylinders under the seat. The hydraulic clutch packs did not start until a few late production 450Bs, which got wet clutches as the mechanical parts were used up. The 450Cs were the first official wet steering clutch machines in the 450 model line.

standardcity,

Please expand a bit on your post, no charges for extra words here. Is this a straight 450 (no B, C, D, etc.) after the 450? Have you confirmed this by the serial number? Different series had different steering systems so being sure which we are discussing here is critical to giving the right info. Do you have the service/technical and Operator's manuals for it? Have you tried adjusting the steering clutch by the manual, in the order given by the manual?

To me "left steering clutch will not engage" means the left steering lever is ahead, at rest, and the left track does not drive. Is that what you mean?

We see people mix up engaged and disengaged in clutch action and just want to be sure we understand your problem. Steering lever ahead is the steering clutch is engaged and driving the track. Steering lever pulled back the steering clutch is disengaged and does not drive the track.

If you pull back on the left lever and the track keeps driving, one cause is the steering clutch pack is rusted or swollen to the point it won't release. If you are not pulling the steering lever and it is not driving the track, oil contamination of the steering clutch pack is a common cause of that condition. And there are mechanical things that can break in the steering clutch and/or final drive to cause either issue.

If the brake works, stops that track when the machine is moving, it should rule out anything, like the axle is broken. Sounds like you need to get into that steering clutch to find the problem.
