Case D450 high lift loader

New to the board, new to this old dozer. Think I blew the head gasket today. I have tons of questions.
Serial appears to be 3028982
Model D450
Ordered filters, a dipstick( went missing today while pushing brush) head gasket, valve cover gasket, switch for the alternator connection. Want to order new head bolts but at $84 ea. I may try using the old ones.
Need to replace battery cables and manufacture new seat cushions.
New hydraulic hoses are on the list and a couple of cylinders leak so rebuilds are on the list.

What kind of hydraulic fluid do I need?
Oil specs? Delvac 10w30?
I'm thinking this is a 207 Cummins. 188 may be more likely after searching gaskets and serial #s. Looks like a casting # on the block A136813.

Any help is much appreciated!

Also need to know where to look for the engine serial. Found the loader and dozer serial.
188 maybe instead of 207 according to gasket listings and serial #.

Welcome to the board!

Really, if you're going to keep & maintain the old beast, you're best investment will be a shop manual & perhaps an owner's manual if you can find one. Parts lists & diagrams can be found online at CaseCE.

If it's an early 188D, serial # might be found on a raised boss above the starter, just below the head, hidden by a preheater relay. Otherwise, usually on a riveted plate somewhere on the block.

Good luck!

Got it fired up tonite and moved to the house. Hole in the oil pan. Gonna pull that tomorrow and see if I can find a fix or a replacement. Pulled the crash plate and pressure washed the crap outta the underneath this evening thanks to my brother and brother in law who know a ton more than I do about motors and tractors.

I found a couple used oil pans. $150 and travel time. Gasket was easy, new oil pan was $500+ at Case dealer.

Seriously considering sand blasting the old one and using some JB Weld and some short steel screws in the holes. Wish the last guy had cleaned out the crash pan.

If I was going to remove, sandblast, and reuse the old oil pan; I would braze, weld, patch the holes in it as needed, not use JB Weld and screws.

Found a pan at a used parts place. Gonna pick it up today. Got the gasket yesterday.
Have a friend who has volunteered to rebuild the lift cylinders for the cost of parts.

Replaced the pressurized line to the oil pressure gauge with copper. Was plastic and had ruptured. Amazing how much oil can come out of an 1/8" line in a short time. Next is the track tensioner shield bolts. Got three out of 4 on one side out. Shoulders sheared off the 4th. Other side will get MAPP gas torch and some liquid wrench for the next couple of days. Oxy-acetylene may be the answer to #4 on the right side front inner.

Good news update. Got some work out of the old girl last week. Still have to change the second fuel filter element and the hydraulic filter. Small crack in the fuel tank up high where it meets the battery box. Only leaks when it's full.
Battery cables get replaced this week too. This is starting to be fun.
