removing and replacing clutch on my 1951 TD6

My TD 6 sat for a year, it was covered. Clutch lever too hard to operate. I had left the clutch disengaged. Will try to
adjust the clutch through the round inspection cover. I know about the bolt and lock to adjust the tension -rockford
over center clutch
What I want to know: Have worked on the clutch assembly when I had the engine out 15 years ago. Is it a hard job to
remove the clutch assembly when assembly in frame? Large cover plate to be removed. Possible set up a come a long
attaching it to the cab roof.
Any information appreciated

Start right now by spraying something like PB blaster on ever thing you can see thru the small plate. In theory it is less that a half day job to remove it but in that machine the center shaft will be stuck and all bolts hard to move. Yes you will need a come-a-long chained to the cab.

When I used to do them back in the day I used to remove things from the hood, lie on my chest and reach down to unbolt the clutch. remove the cross shaft, throw out fork etc, and the grease zerk in the output shaft, after it's undone it comes out in one piece, putting it back a string was used to hold the centre plate up, there is very little clearance, why are you changing it?.

The clutch has worked perfectly for years

Not sure why after a year it became very hard to engage the
clutch with the hand clutch. Will try to loosen tension with
the clutch adjustment. This may take care of the problem

Used to use the td6 in a silage to compact the silage when I

was 13 years old. 80 years old now thought I might have to

remove clutch assembly to free up the clutch. Left clutch in
disengaged position

Traded my rebuilt Super C for the TD 6 20 years ago, Put
new sleeves and pistons in the engine

A very fine old machine. Has all guards, track guards
Any ideas why clutch became so hard to engage?

Rust can build up on the flywheel and cause the clutch to tighten up, before removing it I would back off the adjustment and if possible work it for a bit, it is an awful job to remove those clutches and is a job for the younger man, I am right behind you on the mileage by a couple of years and would not tackle it, it is a SOB job on the dozer/tractor version and twice that on the Drott loader version.
Good luck

AJ,

Yes I think You and I are on the same mileage plan for age.
I have owned 3 TD 6 crawlers in the last 54 years. All were
discarded and I repaired therm . Changing a broken tractor
frame on one, replacing steering clutches, a lot of fun which
I am sure You know. Did these things 40 years ago

I am having a hard time realizing at 80 years of age such
projects that I did 40 years ago are a big challenge for Me
now

I will do anything to avoid removing the master clutch

Chris. Have a good day

I am right there with you two on age and have done a few myself. I have a T6 and hope I am never faced with a master clutch or steer clutch project again.
Seems I remember if the ring keeper falls out or disappears for some unknown reason the ring can tighten up on it's own.
Just a thought. Happy trails

Hi Dennis,

Yes steering clutches on the td6 crawlers are a real chore

I had an HD6 Allis Chalmers and steering clutches was
easier than the TD6. More room for the hands in HD6
steering compartments

My Case 1957 320 Industrial TLB. Roll pin holding one of
the forks in the shuttle trans. Broke ( after 63 years) what a
job. 45 years ago I replaced the shuttle in the shuttle
transmission. Again I was 35 years old. It is pleasant for Me
to know that there are others like Me finding that old age
can be a problem

Hi Dennis
End of tab to secure
Clutch tension ring broke
