transmission lubricant HD3 Allis crawler

Forum,
Seeing as the HD3 Allis is in running condition I need to keep fluids up to par. Need to know what kind of lubricant to add to the transmission as needed. I have a service manual and can not find what is recommended for the transmission. The final drive info was there but not the transmission. Any and all info is appreciated.

To the transmission you can add 80-90W gear oil. To the forward reverse box you can add tractor-hydraulic, straight hydraulic oil or even 10W30 engine oil which you can also use in the hydraulic system.

Thanks for the reply. I am a novice on some terminology concerning transmissions and forward reverse. When you mention transmission do you refer to the final drive? When referring to forward reverse are you talking about the shifter and such which is filled from the top through a dip stick/cap? Blueberries are peaking out as of this week. Lots of rain has helped the crop in the northeast part of the state!

Close to where the gear shift (4 speed) goes in, on top, is where to fill transmission/differential oil, 80-90W. The very next compartment, in front of the 4 speed, is the forward reverser, the filler plug (with dipstick attached underneath) is at the base of the instrument panel. The next compartment, closest to the bell housing takes hydraulic oil as well, or whatever you use as substitute. The filler access to that is right beside the big hydraulic pump. Of course the hydraulic pump on the side, is fed hyd. oil from the tank up by the operator station.
I'm sure you're bringing a lot of blueberries home to the freezer and it will be a good feeling to know that your HD3 is ready to start up and run next time you visit the acreage. Take care, Eric.

Thanks for the info. In a few weeks I will travel north and check all fill port locations. Often wondered where the hydraulic fluid filler was located. Will keep you posted.

If you don't have one, try to get an Operator's Manual. Those are where the type of info you are looking for is located more often than the service manual. There are some on eBay and this site sells them. I don't know about the HD3, but you may need a manual for the blade/loader as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I will get an operators manual.

Just a word of clarification, now that you will be checking the operator's manual for the transmission/differential oil. I was most surprised that the H3/HD3 operators manual says to put 10W30 oil in every compartment of the machine. The reason I suggested 80/90W gear (higher up in this thread) is because the operator's manual for the D14 tractor calls for it, which is the same running gear as your HD3. I know both oil recommendations will serve the machine well and keep the trans/diff durable for a long time. That said, because I have my own oil testing apparatus, the amount of metal to metal protection of 'gear oil' which has the EP additive (Extreme Pressure, making gear oil stinky) far exceeds that of 10W30 engine oil. Your HD3 will be fine whichever oil you put in but I am surprised at the difference between the two manuals when it is more likely that a bulldozer will tend to be put to hard work.

I would not use engine oil in any of your running gear today. This was a common practice when this equipment was built and worked well. Today, however, the engine oil is not what it was, and the current additive packages will not perform adequately. Look for an oil with the same viscosity that has a gear oil rating, like Caterpillar TDTO (Tractor Drivetrain Oil). Cat's current TDTO is TO-4. There's a lot of oil manufacturers that make a TDTO fluid. Your local oil supplier will likely have one with their brand or they'll sell you one manufactured by one of the name brands.
