Case 580B transmission

I have a Case 580B 188D with a manual shuttle transmission. I
bought this in non running basket case condition. I got it running.
It has a new clutch, pressure plate & throw out bearing input shaft
seal and gasket. I went to drain the transmission to check for
water and add new oil. Their was a piece of conduit for a drain
plug that went all the way thru. So their was no oil in the
transmission. I put the proper drain plug in and filled it with 90W.
Started it up to try and move it. It was making some rattling noise.
When I depressed the clutch it stopped, let it out and makes noise
again when the input shaft turns. It did move in all gears, but
would make some strange noises at times. I took the cover off the
torque tube behind the bell housing. Theres no oil in there. My
question is is the supposed to be? Theirs no fill plug or drain plug
in that area. The bearings on the shaft are open roller bearings, I
would think they need to run in oil?

This may help you until someone comes along with more info. These are from a 580B Operator's Manual, you should get a copy for your tractor.

You are correct it does take oil and as far as I remember there were two types, one type was shuttle only the other was shuttle and range, one had a filler plug with a dipstick attached and the other shared the gearbox oil alas I cannot remember which was which but in either case it needs oil hope it hasn't done a bearing in.

I have that manual, but its not clear on the mechanical shuttle. It
says 16qts for the torque tub, but I dont know if thats for
mechanical or power shuttle. It say use TCH fluid which makes me
think its referring to the power shuttle. I would think the
mechanical shuttle would use 90W.

Thanks for all your info. I figured it should have oil, I dont
understand why the transmission oil isnt feeding in there unless
theres some obstruction. I guess Ill fill it with oil and see what
happens. The bearings seem to be ok, and I dont feel anything
loose.
