Case 580 super e

Case se580

Got a case 580 se backhoe with a 4 cylinder Cummins. The injector pump looks as though it has been rebuilt at some point. I have owned this machine since November of 21. From the time I got it home, it has had a starting issue.
If it sits for a day, a week, a month, it will start right up and run as long as you want to. When you shut it off, it will not start again unless it sits for a good while or you open the fuel bleed screw and release the pressure. It will then start up and go until you turn it off.
I have replaced the fuel shut solenoid (twice, just to make sure), checked the voltage to the solenoid when trying to start it, made sure the return to the tank is not clogged.
This is the first piece of equipment like this I have owned, so looking for help as to what may be the problem.
I will try to attach a picture of the tag on the pump.

Yes I would say the pump has been worked on and it has also been rebadged, it would have started life as a CAV, then Lucas CAV and now Delphi, the problem you explain sounds to me like the plunger in the solenoid is sticking, I would for a test remove the solenoid, take out the plunger and spring, put the solenoid back without them, start the engine, run it a bit, stop it with the manual lever (make sure to put the manual lever back to the run position) and then try to start it again, what I'm thinking going by what you say is that the fuel could be getting behind the plunger and can't escape quick enough while there is pressure in the pump, I think the original plunger had a slot in it or was D shaped but it's a while since I changed one, has anyone fitted an electric feed pump or, give that a try and see how you get on.

Thanks. The solenoid is new, but it was cheap, if that has anything to do with it. I will try that and reply back.

I haven t gotten around to taking the plunger out, but I do remember fuel running out when I took the solenoid off. Is that normal?

Yep, that pump is full of fuel to lubricate it and it will run out, you will need to bleed it after you put the switch body back.

I took the solenoid off and it had fuel behind the plunger. The new solenoid spring was a little longer and the plunger stuck out a little further than the old one. I put the plunger and spring from old solenoid in the new one. It would start and run about 3 or 4 minutes and then started acting like it was running out of fuel. I took the plunger and spring completely out and it starts every time, which is what you originally instructed me to do. Both plungers are round. Is there a different solenoid I need? Thought about just leaving the plunger out and running a cable to the shut off lever on the pump. TSC has one with a red knob that says stop. I would have to make a bracket for it.

I'm in the UK and the only solenoid I have got were from the Case dealer and never had your issue, when one would not work it would be replaced by one from the dealer and that would be the end of it, are you sure you got a solid 12v going into the switch especially when cranking the engine over, if there were any bad connections power could be pulled away when cranking, try a direct hot wire for a test.

I have tried a direct 12 volts and a direct ground to the battery with the same results.

File a bit off one side and see if that helps, even if the switch is aftermarket it should work, the ones here were stamped CAV but that was 30 years ago, your issue seems to be pressure are the filters clean and the return free.

The filters are recent and the return line is clear. I ll try filing the plunger. If that doesn t work, is there any reason not to run a cable to the shut off lever? I would just have to make sure to turn the ignition off, but I don t leave the key in it when it is parked.

The early models B & C had a cable stop and a cable will work fine on yours but you should not need it, maybe you should get a switch from Case, that pump was fitted to almost everything here in the UK, I never had that problem, or have I seen it on any of the forums on the net so I don't know what to tell you, I sort suspect the aftermarket switch, if it's not that then the pump is suspect so unless you fly me out to have a hands on I can't offer any other help.
