Lucas Diesel Pump Problem

Just picked up a Walden 5000 loader with 4B3.9 engine and am trying to get it started. Bleeding the injection system and do not get any fuel to the injectors. Hand pump pushes fuel out all the bleeding taps, but nothing out the lines. We have spun it over with the starter and still no fuel. Is their anything else to do before taking it to the repair shop? Thanks in advance.

If your machine has a cable to kill engine, try pulling it out to get machine to run.I've run across several machines with that setup.David Brown as an example.

Ben, pump has an electric solenoid that seems to be working, but pulled the spring and needle and still not getting fuel. Thanks for the reply. Jo

mite-help thanks for the reply.
Spent another 4 hr's on checking every thing out and finally pulled it off. The shaft is turning and every thing seems okay. It's got me stumped so it's off to the repair shop on Monday .

What ever you do please post your results. We have a older cummins with the old style pump and it was running rough , removed the injector pump sent it to shop, complete rebuild now it just like yours, fuel thru all the bleeds and lines but no injection pressure .

In both cases above a stuck injector needle valve could be the cause,if an injector needle valve is stuck in the delivery position it will allow compression to pass out through the injector and into the injector pump causing an air lock in the delivery head of the pump,(you can't do this test if the pump is off the engine)see if you have an injector blowing back, undo the injector pipes at the injectors, put a squirt of oil into each nipple of the injector, protect your face, get someone to crank the engine over on the starter while you watch the injectors,if one blows back that is the trouble,if none blows back the trouble is in the pump, often with a Lucas CAV pump the metering valve can stick in the stop position, the newer pumps with the electric stop usually had a manual lever stop in front of the throttle lever on the top cover of the pump so the engine could be stopped manually,it does not have a cable attached, check it out,if the pump is off do not turn the engine till it's back on again and timed.

AJ Item no. 10 do you know what threads are on the male part that screws in to the pump? Almost 1/8 NF pipe but I am not certain. Pump shop kept my fitting and I am having trouble finding the fitting.

I do not know what the thread could be but nearly all pipe fittings in the UK are BSP,if you have a Case dealer near you the Case # for that fitting is J904643,one from a Perkins would be the same.

A J thanks for the re[ply that saved me a problem, no body wanted to mess with finding the fitting..You how dealers are..

I have the same problem. Used to run fine, last time I started I had to crank a long time before it lit off. This time nothing. So:

replaced electric fuel pump
bled supply lines and cover
did spit test for injectors above, no spitting
Stop solenoid clicks with power
no manual shut off
nothing coming out of the injector lines

Then there is this:

I'm not sure what it is but it was linked to the throttle lever with the plastic link which is broken. The lever was extremely stiff which explains the broken link so I removed it and attempted to disassemble to loosen it up but you can see that didn't go so well.

So what is it and what does it do? Can it keep the engine from starting?

Sorry, apparently I can't post photos yet with this new log in (my email address changed). So this thing is a big nut on the engine side of the pump (about 1-3/8") with a small lever in the center maybe an inch and a half long with a ball on the end. It has maybe 90 degrees of motion. It is linked by a plastic piece with a socket on each end to a ball on the throttle linkage. Thanks.

Jim Blackwood,

You really need to start a new post of your own to get the most help. If you have been around as your post indicates, I expect you know this site uses two different views, Classic and Modern. I expect you may have posted this in Modern where a post added to an old thread brings that whole thread to the top, and your post is shown at the end of the old thread, so people see the previous posts, so they know what you are referring to. When one views it in Classic, only your post is visible, none of the old thread since Classic does not bring old posts to the top, they stay on the page in history where they were originally posted. Your post by itself doesn't give all/any of the info needed to help you.

New users generally need more than 5 posts on record before including pictures or links. It sounds like you have been around for a while but changed something in your profile. You should contact Chris down on the Site Comments forum for instructions and he can likely fix your problem but will do anything related to passwords by email.

Thanks I posted that, but really I'm OK with the new login account. I can make a few posts.

This is a Frankenstein. An engine out of a Toro Groundsmaster 3000D in an old Mitsubishi FGC25N forklift. The injector pump is a Lucas PCM .07, DPC R8444B981 Ser: 445162 KPF

I have found a couple off Peugeot 106's on ebay.uk and am trying to get shipping sorted for one. Basically for parts. It doesn't look like that pump was used in the states.

That linkage you mentioned is for fast idle when the engine is cold I believe, if the engine was running ok before you stopped it and now won't start take the stop solenoid off and put it back without the plunger for a test, see if that works.
