JD 440 crawler

I just purchased a 440 crawler and have a few questions.

Does the idler wheel assembly just slide on the metal frame?

One side the The tract is too tight. Can I let some grease out of the tensioner?

If I can How do I do that.

How do I grease the rollers. It has the rock guards on it?

I know I need a manual but I would like to get these taken care of.

(quoted from post at 07:14:17 06/30/22) I just purchased a 440 crawler and have a few questions.

Does the idler wheel assembly just slide on the metal frame? Yes[/color:9b2f1c8053]

One side the The tract is too tight. Can I let some grease out of the tensioner? Yes, if you have hydraulic track adjusters[/color:9b2f1c8053]

If I can How do I do that. See the picture below. If it is still OEM, remove #10, then loosen #9 to let grease out. If you remove #9 be careful not to lose #8. If #9 is removed, those balls often come out in the grease and don't get seen so are thrown away. Grease won't stay in without that ball under #9.[/color:9b2f1c8053]

How do I grease the rollers. It has the rock guards on it? If the rollers are grease type, there will be a grease fitting in the exposed shaft end, accessible with the rock guards in place. OEM they were button head fittings but may have been changed to common zerks or someone may have put pipe plugs in the fitting holes. You need to use a low-pressure grease gun or you can blow any existing seals out (they are not common seals). If the tracks have been updated to 350 components (which is the fix if new undercarriage is needed) the rolls may not have fittings.

(quoted from post at 13:11:08 06/30/22) So if one side has too much in how do you go about relieving that pressure?
remove the hex headed plug

As described above where you asked about that. Remove#10 and loosen #9 and grease will come out a relief hole in the housing. DO NOT LOSE #8 IF YOU FULLY REMOVE #9. You may need to push the idler back or jump on the track between the top roll and idler if it doesn't move on its own.

This machine has a 5 speed transmission
it has a side lever, lever is on the left side
all the way forward gives u one speed and 1 reverse and 5 forward gears
at center no gears
all the way back gives you 1 forward and 5 reverse

is that correct?

Not quite. The handle on the left side is a wet clutch reverser. Handle forward travel forward (5 forward speeds). Handle all the way back is reverse (5 reverse speeds). Do not use reverse in the transmission with reverse in the reverser to make a forward gear. That is in the operator's manual. If you don't want to use the reverser keep it in forward and use just the transmission gears (5 forward and one reverse. You can make it act like it is in neutral if you hold the lever center but do not trust it as a neutral, as the operator's manual says, put the transmission in neutral and the reverser locked in forward or reverse.

Parts for those reversers are getting scarce so treat it right, they are handy. Below is a scan of the reverser page from my JD 430 Operator's Manual (the late 430s and maybe a few 420s used that same reverser). The lubrication and adjustment of it is in the JD 430 Operator's Manual and I expect you will find the same in the JD440 manual.

When you have question about your 440 you should identify it as a 440IC for gas, or 440ICD for diesel.

To add to what Jim said, always use the foot clutch when shifting the reverser. Failure to do so will cause damage to the
reverser. Once the tabs get stripped off of the clutch discs, then you will have no reverser. Also keep good fluid in
there, lots of little tiny bearings.
I do have a fair amount of new and used parts for the reversers if you have to work on it.
