Will go backward fine and forward only on flat level ground. Will not pull a grade to move. Oil on Torque converter stick smells like burnt auto trans in a car. Am I right it needs the forward clutch replaced and probably might as well do the back and converter while in there so no parts have contaminated oil to ruin the clutches after replacement. Looking for information before I pull it apart.

There were two models of the 580K series one and two, the series one had the Borg Warner shuttle coupled to a Case transaxle, the series two had a Carraro power train, chalk and cheese between the two, the series one with the Borg Warner shuttle that's the one with a little oil pan under the shuttle and the can of coke like solenoid on the left side, it was common on those for the Belleville spring to crack and go weak allowing drive to be lost, the shuttle has to come out to repair it, the shuttle comes out on it's own without the bellhousing, if you got the Carraro the transmission and shuttle diff all the one unit, I have never know the clutches to fail in any of them, the machines we looked after were mostly doing utility work and the shuttle would not get the abuse doing road work like a machine on a job site, see what you got.

A.J. I would by your description it is a Borg Warner shuttle. I looked at it today some with little results. You say I can pull the shuttle with out going to the bell housing. What does it weigh?

I have changed several over the years and do not know how much they weigh, I usually use a floor jack, the main thing to watch for is keep the unit level till it clears the torque, ie the back should not be let down as the front shaft that fits in the torque would go up with the risk of damaging the torque, the same applies when fitting keep it level, drain the fluid, after the drive shaft, fill tube, plumbing, wiring, control and the cut-out solenoid are removed there are five 7/16 bolts holding the shuttle to the bellhousing, 5/8 socket remove the five bolts, support the weight and pull the shuttle straight back till it clears the torque and lower it to the floor.
