I have a D4 7U with a pony start Id like to switch over to electric. Does anyone have or know who to call to get a starter kit for it? Thanks!

Is your bellhousing drilled for a starter? Do you already have a generator on the engine? If so, all you need is a starter, switch and the attendant wiring. If your Cat doesnt have the necessary starter mounting point and charging system present already, then oh, boy, youre going to be in deep...

To properly convert a 7U to electric start is going to be a project. We have a factory D2 5U that is electric and you will need the proper starter, generator for 24 volt charging, proper injector precups with glow plugs unless you like using either all the time. Pony motor comes out and thats where the batteries go, coolant to the pony gets blocked off and the pony starter transmission gets removed.

All I wanted to know is who has good starters for a good price. Dont need to know how to build the watch, just need a part for the watch.

You will need a 24 volt starter with a helical Bendix (a conventional starter will have a straight cut Bendix and will not do unless you change the ring gear) and a 24volt alternator that is gear driven, you will need some sort of starting aid, glow plugs works out very expensive as the precombustion chambers have to be changed, some people use the diesel type glow plug in the manifold instead, you may as well use an alternator as it is better and easier to wire up, the people in the picture can help.

Why would you want a 24V system, every direct start built up to the modern one's of the eighties were 24V, you can go 12V if you want, it is just that 24V gives that bit extra and if you live in an area that you have frost/snow and extreme cold 24V is an advantage, but again up to yourself.

People are trying to offer insight and help. If that's a problem for you then maybe you should do the leg work yourself instead ofg expecting someone else do it for you.

What the guys are pointing out to you is that without the pony engine there has to be a way to pre-heat for starting. With the pony the exhaust from it runs through the air intake manifold, doing the pre-heating.The direct electric start engines were equipped with glow plugs. That is a PC angine,it needs warm air to start.I put a conversion on a D-6,9U series back around 1988.The conversion cost about $600.then,plus I had to buy a Delco 40 MT starter.I have no idea if that is still made or not.We had a big propane torch that we would run up and down the manifold when starting. That tractor started the same at 20 degrees as it did at 70.

My 1961 D6B was originally pony start. Converted before I bought it. Needs some ether for the first start of the day. From then on it will start with just the turn of the key. 24 volt system. I keep the batteries hot with a solar maintainer I built.

Sorry I replied. Your a real jerk!

You asked for a >...Starter kit...<, that entails all the incidentals necessary to fit a starter to a non-electric start D4, not that you just need a starter.

A call to your local Cat dealer can get you that.

Back in the mid fifties we imported a lot of used Cat equipment from the US mainly tracked loaders for clearing up the hundreds of acres of bomb damage after the war, all the machines of that era were pony start, we used to convert them to direct start which was a big job back then because the helix drive for the starter was not available or made which meant the engine had to come out to change the ring gear to suit the straight cut gear on the starter, all them conversions were 24V, the engines in the 933, 955, 955H and 977 F&H had the new style screw in pre combustion chambers then that were drilled and tapped to take the glow plugs, it was a generator that was used as the alternator had not yet arrived till the end of the sixties, so what is needed is the starter, generator/voltage regulator of alternator, pre combustion chambers and glow plugs, relay for the glow plugs, bus bar for the glow plugs, ammeter, heat/start switch, key safety switch, circuit breaker, all the necessary wiring and cables, terminals, battery box, make sure your heart is good when you price that lot up at Cat.

Would you please show me where I asked anyone to do this for me? I just want to know good places to call for a starter? Why all the drama? I'm just a guy, looking for a starter. Thats all I was asking for. Not sure why there is this much controversy. Grow up!

You dont have to have a charging system for a starter. Coming from a guy with a ton of old tractors that dont charge I know thats true. A starter kit means the things you need to put the starter on is what I ment. Not sure why some of yall are getting so ticked off when I'm not hanging on your every word like your some guru. I was simply looking for a place to contact for one. Dag gone here boys, I mean, really? I just wanted to know who to contact for a starter and if there was anything odd or special to look for in a kit for the starter. Didnt say charging system, just the starter.

Why would I have to remove the pony motor? its not in the way. Also not sure why I would need to do all the injector work. It cant be harder to start then a IH hot head on direct diesel from the start up and I have several that can do that with no ether and they are on 12v

Somehow I do not equate asking about a starter kit as asking about the availabilty of a starter. Just sayin' , I believe you got the responses you asked for. I want to see pictures of it running. LOL

You have all the answers. Go look it up yourself.

Where my farms are at its hilly. Dozers on steep grades when its sloppy wet or frozen is just a death wish, i'm sure youd agree.

Tim you could pay a visit to a truck or machinery salvage yard and get a starter from any Cat or Cummins engine, Delco Remy 40 or 50 MT will do, you will have to change the Bendix to suit the Cat ring gear, I advise to go 24v because without glow plugs you will have the extra bit of cranking power, is your bellhousing drilled to take a starter.
