MF 400 questions

Hi all,
There is a fellow I have bought several tractors off. He never has any real history on them. Anyway he has a Massey Ferguson 400. It has a blade and a winch. I haven't asked yet if it is for sale (I'm sure it is though - everything else is!) or the the price. All I know is that the engine [was] stuck from water down the top. What else is likely to be wrong with it? If I give it a run what are things I should look for? Having never run a dozer I guess I'm a bit green on tracked machines...I have a fair bit of experience with wheeled tractors. What would its value be if not running, and if it is fully operational? It doesn't look too bad overall.
Thanks - Joshua

The engine parts should be easy enough to come by as it's a Perkins, the tractor parts could be as said above a problem, after checking the fluids, if the engine is running work it a bit, see it pushes and steers lifts the blade etc, do all the checks you would do on a wheeled tractor, have a look at the tracks, sprockets, idlers and rollers, look at the bushings in the track chain, if you have a person that has a crawler or experience of them get him to have a look, why was it parked in the first place, that makes it a suspect that there is something wrong with it that was not easy to fix, can't say about the price most go by the scrap value of such a tractor.

78 years old and not trying to be a smart a.. but have a world of bad experience.. Take what ever money the guy is asking and just go out on the porch and thro it in the air. At least you would get the scarification of seeing it blow away. Massey sourced those from Hanamog , and when they were new they were not that great now 43 years latter nothing but a money pit. Some of the parts are next to impossible to find.. Seriously i would leave it set nothing but a money pit.

That's why the track pads look so good.
Never runs long enough to wear out the undercarriage.

Agee with everything you said.
A wise warning.
