+Injection pump/ low power issue

I have to revisit this issue after a long break due to life, but... The owner sent the injection pump for the old Int out for rebuild The serial # is 239DT2D181162 on the block behind oil filter. I replaced the pump with another from a company he found as the other pump was not rebuildable, age wear etc. I installed the pump and thought it was all set, it runs like a top at idle but lack any kind of power to climb a hill or dig just plain lacks power. The exhaust is quite black under load. I tried to move the injection pump but am only able to move it a small amount due to the injection lines. Has anyone else run into this type of problem? I have not removed the injectors yet and am a bit worried as they appear to be rusty where they go into the head and I believe they have cups they sit in and just dont wish to make more work for myself but I think its coming.

Black smoke points to lack of air so the first and easiest thing to do is check the air system and eliminate it, if the timing is ok and all the filters clean i would be having the injectors serviced.

AJ[/q uote] Thanks for the input AJ, I did clean out the air intake tube and air cleaner housing both of which were packed with dry grass and material. My next step will be to remove the injectors and have them gone through. Do you know if this engine has the injector cops like the early to late 80 vintage DT 466s, If so I will have to drain the coolant to prevent getting it in the oil and having to change it again. Thanks for your insight and help. Mike

If I can remember correctly the injectors were held in with a one bold clamp and came straight out but I am not sure it's so long since I worked on one, if they are tight twist them back and fourth to loosen them, just to be sure drain out a couple of gallons to bring the level below the head.

Old iron,
Had this happen to an HD3 Allis. It lacked power and spewed soot like exhaust under load. Have you checked the air filter to intake? Mine was completely plugged. After changing the
filter it ran like a charm. HTH

(reply to post at 10:23:43 08/02/Yeah Mr T. I did unplug when I did the srevice while trying to get it to run the first time around but I will double check it just to be sure they didnt get back in there. Thanks to all. I will let you know whats going on as I work on it. Thanks Mike

(reply to post at 16:00:40 08Well guys sorry about the delay in getting back but been having some issues. Got her running but it seems she has been making oil so did a oil change and some checking. Right now I have the lift pump out and bypassed with a electric pump and she runs well, BUT still making oil. I guess I will be taking the injection pump back out to have the pump tested and be sure the seal aint bad. Poor beast is having a hard time getting right. I am not sure but I dont believe there is any other way for it to be making more oil, is there? /03/21)

[/quote]t appears to me that I never hit the submit button for the above response, very sorry. Update for all I appear to have gotten the old girl to run, had injectors rebuilt, needed to be done, checked all filters, good. Caleed the pump company and they said to remove it but dont think that it is a seal

that is the problem because they test all their pumps.... Well after I took the injection pump out I changed the oil for the 3rd time due to fuel dilution. When the pump got reinstalled I left the electric pump on to be sure the lift pump was not the issue. The Beast runs again but we are getting a blueish smoke which I guess will be the case now due to the fuel baths she got washing the crankcase, the oil is still very clean after having run for a couple of hours more like a newer gas engine than a old diesel. Reinstalled lift pump, and no more extra oil. Thanks again to all who responded and sorry about the reply hickup.
