advancing injector pump timing

About to head north again to work on the HD3 Allis. Plan if needed to either clean injectors there or return home to have them cleaned by a reputable diesel tech. I mentioned to this tech that the 1965 HD3 smokes a lot when it first starts and then clears up. I do not believe this is a coolant issue. He said that I should advance the timing on the pump. He said over time gears wear and could cause a slight timing issue. The remedy is to carefully advance the timing on the pump. Question is which direction do I reset the timing if it has a clockwise rotation viewing from the shaft end of the pump? My guess it to rotate the pump in a counter clockwise rotation. Any and all thoughts are welcome.
 

In the pre-emissions days stuff rattled and SMOKED but got the job done.

Is your machine not getting the job done or what is the exact issue?

How much (politically correct) $$$ are you needing to throw at it to make the exhaust a little cleaner?
 
That pump turns clockwise, so moving the housing against the rotation will advance timing. I'd check the static timing first though to see if it's where it should be. DO
NOT TURN PUMP WITH ENGINE RUNNING!!!!! ONLY change timing with engine OFF, or risk of pump seizure/drive shaft breakage can happen. I wouldn't hold my breath though, as
any tired diesel with lower compression WILL smoke more when cold until engine warms up.
 
I agree with the others don't worry about a bit of smoke after start up, a couple of days hard work might solve the problem for you without doing anything else.

My HD3 always smokes when started cold then it is fine. If it starts decent I would leave it alone. I think they are a little cold
blooded anyway.
