International 530 Payloader - Transmission issue

Borrowed a neighbor's 530 payloader to move some dirt. It worked great for most of the job, but suddenly it quit moving, any gear, any direction. Fiddled with it for a bit and finally got it to move in Reverse, 3. Parked and let sit for a while.

Checked and filled transmission oil. Periodically would move, sometimes in forward, sometimes in reverse. As outside temp fell, if it was REALLY cold, I could get it to go forward and reverse, but as the machine warmed up, it would go back to one or no direction, usually 3rd gear only.

Other hydraulics work fine. Replaced transmission oil filter.

I'm at a loss on what (and where) to check next. Any expert opinions?

First thing the equipment hydraulics are completely separate from the transmission hydraulics, have you checked the control linkage to see it has not come adrift, the filters and suction screen are clean, your problem sounds like the charge pump is making no pressure when the oil is hot, this can be due to many things, it could be as simple as the input shaft seal of the pump drawing air, suction line drawing air, worn pump or internal leak, those problems it will drive one minute and won't the next are a right PIA, you may have to drain the oil to see if there is any metal in it, what are the gauges reading, are the brakes working properly?.

Thanks for the reply --

Linkage is OK, I changed that one filter on the LH side, where would I find the suction screen? For that matter is the pump on the transmission (upper or lower end?)

Parking break works I know for sure, regular breaks I'm not 100% sure on.

I've got mechanical experience on auto, and have done some very minor work on tractors, but this is the first time I've seen or worked on something like this. A manual would be a nice asset to have for sure.

Why I asked about the brakes is if they are not working the only other means of stopping is using the transmission by going to the opposite direction which is continuously shock loading the drive train going from forward to reverse while the machine is moving fast, it's a mystery why it will only move in third gear, the tranny has five clutches, forward/reverse and three speed clutches, you did not say what the gauges are reading, I can't remember where the suction screen is located but it is usually at the lowest part of the tranny, Go over to the IH site Red Power there are some posts there about the 530 those guys eat, sleep and live for IH.

The screens are at the bottom of the tranny where the large hose goes into the transmission. I had one 530 that I went to check the mesh filter and when I got the plate off, there was no filter there, some one took it off and never put it back.

If you been slamming it from forward to reverse to stop and vice versa what can you expect but to have transmission problems, dangerous as well.
